Hurricane Sandy is on its way, and the press has made no bones about it. It's either the "worst storm ever" or the "biggest storm of all time" or the "storm to end all storms." Let's just say the headlines haven't exactly been restrained. For people living in the path of Sandy, this can mean not only several trips to the store to stock up on batteries, flashlights, and ramen noodles, but a panicky crying jag while you clutch your battery-powered lamp in one hand and your drink of choice in the other. Luckily for us, there's Twitter. One of the small upsides of any major event, no matter how dramatic or traumatic, is Twitter tittering. And Sandy is no different. A little comic relief in tense times is always welcome, if you ask me. Though I won't be laughing if my computer ends up floating in the East River. Here's some of the best funny #Sandy tweets.

Today in zombie apocalypse news: Look! In the sky! It's a bird! It's a plane! It's ... the putrid corpse of a fly-parasitized honey bee lurching through the air on "a flight of the living dead!" In other words, it's a ZomBee!!! Yes, it's true -- zombie bees really do exist. I'm talking about in real life, not some campy 50's horror flick (Attack of the Killer ZomBees!) or even some 60's musical sitcom in which people say they're ZomBee-in' around, but they're too busy buzzing to put anybody down. (Sorry, I tried to stop myself. No I didn't.)

Anyway, zombie bees aren't just real, they're getting to be a real problem. Originally discovered in California in 2008, the epidemic is spreading to Washington state, Oregon, and South Dakota, and it's posing a legit threat to the honey bee population. How does a bee become a ZomBee, exactly? Well, the process ain't pretty, so squeamish types should stop here ...

Finally Christians and Muslims have something to agree on: They don’t want public school teachers teaching their children on matters that go against the teachings of their respective religions -- topics ranging from homosexuality and birth control to evolution and global warming.

In Ontario, Canada, newly passed Bill 13 promotes diversity and acceptance in an attempt to curb bullying. Punishing bullies used to be sufficient, but apparently not anymore. Now our kids need to be taught about sex -- both homosexual and heterosexual -- to avoid hurting anyone’s feelings.

Who needs Rage Against the Machine? I've got the perfect Romney/Ryan campaign song: Jesus loves me, this I know ... because he spared the RNC from the wrath of Hurricane Isaac and sent it straight to those sinners in New Orleans! Praise the Lord! (Throw hands in the air.) Pah-rayse HIM!

Yes, Rev. Jesten Peters of Tampa Bay says that when God Almighty decided to send Hurricane Isaac away from the Republican National Convention, He did so under the advisement of her prayer group, "Pray Tampa Bay."

“We have had lots and lots of people praying around the clock that it would move, and after you watch from the very beginning where they were saying it was coming and now where they say it is going, then it has really moved out of the way for us and we appreciate God doing that and moving it for us,” said the pastor.

That was super nice and accomodating of God, wasn't it?

This has officially been the worst summer ever. Shootings, Rob & Kristen, hurricanes, more shootings. And more shootings. Can things get any more depressing? Yes they can. A mouse-poop virus is killing visitors of Yosemite National Park. I know. It sounds totally fake or like a Will Smith movie but it's not. It's called the hantavirus and I didn't know you could catch a virus from mouse droppings either, but apparently you can and this is nothing to joke about.

Growing up in the '90s, I loved watching Bill Nye the Science Guy. Admit it: If you were a kid in the '90s, you’re singing the theme song in your head right now. Bill made learning fun by making science entertaining. With shows ranging on topics from blood and circulation to simple machines to erosion, the dude made our science teachers’ lives easier because they could pop in the tape for us and grade some papers.

So it kind of breaks my heart a little now that one of my childhood heroes insists on teaching my children’s generation that evolution is the only valid theory of existence. Bill Nye doesn’t even want my children to hear about creationism.

Guess what's scary? Mutant butterflies are scary. MUTANT BUTTERFLIES are really, really scary. Especially when said butterflies mutated as a direct result of nuclear fallout exposure; in this case, the disturbingly large quantities of radiation which escaped into the environment during last year's Fukushima Daiichi power plant disaster in Japan. Of course it was only a matter of  time before scientists monitoring Fukushima animal life were bound to make some type of extremely alarming discovery. We all knew that, despite the Japanese government's attempts to pass off the "low-level radiation" as "insignificant." Certainly the scientists knew what to expect ... right?

Well, they thought they knew what to expect. But even the scientists were shocked when they found the mutant butterflies (which is really, really, really scary). Guess why?

Definitely one of the wildest, most awe-inspiring "caught on video" moments ever, I think this incredible footage of a surprise "glacier tsunami" is best described by the guy who happened to be holding the camera. See, it was kind of by chance that Jens Møller of Greenland ended up on his uncle's boat the day it happened -- an Australian tourist asked for a ride to see the glacier, and Møller's uncle asked his nephew to go along as translator.

"I am from another town where glaciers are fairytales," says Møller. Considering himself to be "as much of a tourist as the Australian," he joined the crew. Hey, if nothing else, he figured the scenery would be spectacular. He was right ... sort of.

"The beautiful scenery was amazing," Møller said later, "but nature doesn't care about anyone."

    Uh-oh.

And you thought Mount Vesuvius was a big deal. Well, I mean, it was a big deal. And you weren't really there anyway, because the volcano erupted in Pompeii, Italy, back in 79 AD. But apparently there's another volcano hidden in the same area, and this one ain't just any old volcano -- it's a supervolcano, the only kind capable of "eruptions that can have global catastrophic effects comparable to major meteorite impacts."

Oh boy! Like the "meteorite impact" thought to have caused the extinction of the dinosaurs? Yup! That's why scientists are planning to drill 2.2 miles beneath the surface of the area to monitor the activity of the molten lava (i.e., watch for warning signs).

Of course, locals are nervous -- more about the drilling than the possible GIGANTIC eruption, however.

It's been a bad week if you're a fish and you live in the Midwest. About 40,000 shovelnose sturgeon died in Iowa last week as water temperatures rose to over 97 degrees. Catfish, carp, and other fishies also turned belly-up, as well as bass and redhorse fish in the Illinois region. The summer continues to blast the Midwest with heat and draught, and there's no respite in sight. The water in some spots has reached 100 degrees. Ouch.

Obviously, it's one of the driest and hottest summers on record, and thousands of fish are paying the price, almost literally. Can you guess how much those dead sturgeon are worth?
