Growing up, Black History Month was very special for my family. Yes, we acknowledged the accomplishments of great African Americans, but it signified so much more. The past has shaped the world for all of us, and because of the sacrifices of others, we live in a much better place. So in honor of Black History Month 2013, here are 10 inspiring quotes from great women of color that perfectly symbolize how far this country has come, while offering hope for an even brighter future.

How do you recognize or celebrate Black History Month?

After a long battle against stage 4 breast cancer, New Hampshire National Guard soldier Charlie Morgan passed away on Sunday morning. She will be remembered as a fighter ... not just because she was a soldier. But because she also made it a personal mission to try to overturn the Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA). The law hit home for her -- because she was gay -- and now, even after her passing, will create problems for her widow, Karen ...

Despite the fact that Charlie and Karen were legally married and had a 5-year-old daughter named Casey together, Karen will receive NONE of the survivor benefits bestowed upon a straight military widow. Can you believe that?!

People are up in arms about a new logo unveiled by the state Florida. It's designed to promote economic development, but many think it promotes sexism instead.

And honestly, it does. Designed by Enterprise Florida, it reads: "Florida: the Perfect Climate for Business." Which is fine, but instead an "i" they used a tie. You know the kind MEN wear with their suits.

I tend to be pretty slow to jump on the political correctness outrage bandwagon unless something is pretty blatant. In many cases I think people are overreacting and read too much into things. But a tie? How many women do you know that wear a tie? Can you imagine them ever inserting a tube of lipstick or a high-heeled shoe for the "i" instead in something like this?

President Obama says that the Boy Scouts should drop their national ban on allowing gay members. In an interview on Sunday, he was asked about his opinion regarding the recent announcement that the Boy Scouts of America (BSA) are considering allowing gays to participate in the organization.

The president said that the Scouts are "a great institution that are promoting young people and exposing them to opportunities and leadership that will serve people for the rest of their lives. And I think nobody should be barred from that."

The more things change, the more they stay the same. At least that’s how it seems with recent data that shows that the most common job for a woman to hold in the 1950s is that same as it was in 2010: Secretary.

Wait … what? Haven’t women broken the glass ceiling and those tired old stereotypes that dictate they’re better off in the secretarial pool than in some high-powered corporate role? Yes! But that doesn’t mean there’s anything wrong with more women than men filling secretarial roles in the workforce.

Is Rush Limbaugh going soft or sensible on immigration reform? The controversial talk radio host seems to have changed his tune after talking to 2016 GOP presidential hopeful Marco Rubio on his program this earlier this week.

On Monday, as a group of eight legislators hit Capitol Hill to propose new immigration measures, Limbaugh lambasted the idea. "We've done this before. We've done amnesty before," he said. "This immigration bill that everybody's touting on TV today is essentially the Bush immigration bill that was beat back in 2007."

Hungry? Sorry, honey, you’re failing algebra, so no groceries for you this month! Stacey Campfield, a Republican state Senator in Tennessee, introduced legislation this week that would slash welfare benefits to parents whose kids are getting bad grades in school.

The thinking? Senator Campfield somehow imagines this would force parents to take an active role in their kids’ education. “Nothing motivates people like money,” he explained. Seriously? What an arrogant jerk! As if hunger isn't "motivating" enough. Poor kids need all the help they can get. Oh, and don’t think that he’s pushing for children to truly excel. “We’re not asking children to re-write the Magna Carta,” Campfield said. “A D-minus gets you through.”

Remember the wife of Lt. Col. Heather Mack, Ashley Broadway, who was rejected from a private military club at Fort Bragg, which claimed Broadway couldn't join without a military ID card, but actually seemed to be discriminating against her for being gay? Well, looks like Broadway is getting the last laugh!

On Friday, she told the Associated Press that she received an invitation from the club's board in an email. At the same time, Broadway was notified that she has been named Fort Bragg's 2013 "Military Spouse of the Year" by Military Spouse magazine. And wait -- there's even MORE. Mack gave birth to the couple's second child, a baby girl, this week! Whoa, talk about news worth celebrating!

Equality! According to senior defense officials, it seems as though Pentagon chief Leon Panetta is lifting the restriction for women in the military to serve in front-line combat positions and elite commando jobs. This “groundbreaking” effort lifts the 1994 rule prohibiting women from being assigned to smaller combat units. This will likely eventually include inclusion into special operation forces like the Navy SEALS and the Army’s Delta Force.

Currently women already serve in combat support roles as medics, military police, or intelligence officers, but this would be the first time they’d be able to be assigned specifically to a combat role on the front lines.

Today is perhaps one of the most meaningful holidays on the calendar, a day when we remember a true American hero and revolutionary: Martin Luther King, Jr. He would have turned 84 years old this year (his birthday is actually January 15), but he was tragically assassinated at only 38 years of age, on April 4, 1968. Still, the clergyman and activist did more for the advancement of civil rights in his short lifetime than anyone in this country before or since. Perhaps most remarkable of all, Martin Luther King, Jr., made change through peaceful protest. His words were his weapon, his way of galvanizing a generation into action.

And so, on this profound occasion, we honor Martin Luther King, Jr. and his legacy with a selection of his most memorable and significant quotes.
