In the lead-up to President Obama's second inauguration, the media's taking a microscope to his approval rating. According to a New York Times/CBS News poll released today, 51 percent of just about 1K Americans surveyed between January 11-15 approve of how the prez is handling his job. By comparison, 41 percent disapprove. So, okay ... Doesn't sound necessarily very good or very bad, right?

But to figure out where our POTUS really stands, it helps to compare these approval numbers next to other presidents' as they were entering their second-term. Not to mention considering the circumstances that may be contributing to his "progress report," so to speak ...

Kat Cammack is the 24-year-old girl wonder in House freshman Ted Yoho’s congressional office. The former pageant girl and head cheerleader is the unlikely congressman’s chief of staff, and she’s hoping to shake things up on the Hill.

Ted Yoho isn’t exactly what you’d expect to find roaming the halls of the Capitol, so it makes sense that his chief of staff isn’t either. He doesn’t come from the typical background of a lifelong career in politics or law -- he comes from the farm. Literally. Prior to challenging 12-term Republican Congressman Cliff Stearns in the primary last August, Yoho spent 30 years as a large animal veterinarian.

Since the presidential campaign ended last fall, many people have been wondering what the Romney’s plans for the future are. Whatever they are, they apparently don’t include a turn on the dance floor for season 16 of Dancing with the Stars.

Ann Romney, the wife of former Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney, was in talks with DWTS executives about an appearance on the show, sources say. She was “very interested,” but ultimately decided against it.

Maybe President Obama should borrow one or two of Mitt Romney’s binders full of women, because there’s clearly a shortage of females among his top staff. The White House recently released a photo on its Flickr account with the caption: "In the Oval Office, the President meets with senior advisors to discuss the ongoing fiscal cliff negotiations."

There are 11 men in the picture and exactly zero females.

There's no arguing that 2012 was a year filled with passion. There was much to get fired up about this year -- for better or worse. Thankfully, at least for women, fighting the good fight -- whether at the polls or the Olympic Games -- truly ended up paying off. And ensuring that we're all better off.

Here, 12 of the biggest wins for women in 2012 ...

Remember when the auto industry started crashing and the government came in and spent our money to prop it up? In 2009, we spent $50 billion on GM, to purchase just over 25% of the company -- 500 million shares. Then remember a few months ago, when President Obama campaigned hard on the premise that they had saved the auto industry? Joe Biden even illustriously cried from the podium at the Democratic National Convention, “Osama bin Laden is dead and General Motors is alive!”

So what’s all this news now about the U.S. Treasury selling off its GM shares at a loss to taxpayers? Didn’t GM already pay off their loans? President Obama praised them as a great example, and GM even said “thanks” to America in a commercial about it. Did they pay back the loans in full and with interest or did they not?

It’s been over a month since Barack Obama won reelection, but for some reason chief campaign advisor David Axelrod is still sending me emails. One of the latest emails asked me to click on a link to view the President’s moving speech from Sunday night in the town of Newtown, the site of last week’s school shooting massacre.

    Axelrod stated:

“As we reflect on the lives lost last week, we must also, as the President urged, consider how each of us can play a part in making our country worthy of the memory of those little children.”

When you click on either of the two links in the email, it takes you to BarackObama.com, where you can click the “donate” button and donate $15-$1,000 … to the Obama-Biden campaign.

Victories at the polls proved that 2012 was an amazing year for all women. But that's not to say there weren't also discouraging moments in the headlines along the way. Moments that could easily make you worry that we as women and as moms haven't made as much progress as we'd like to think we have.

From Ann Romney's remarks about working moms to totally OMG statements about how "selfish" all moms are, here are the most cringe-worthy, disparaging, all-around worst "mommy war" quotes about moms from the past year ...

TIME magazine has named President Barack Obama person of the year for 2012. This is the second time for Obama; he was TIME's person of the year as President Elect in 2008. Here's how TIME editor Richard Stengel explained their choice:

In many ways, Barack Obama is the 21st century version of this new American. But he’s more than just a political figure; he’s a cultural one. He is the first President to embrace gay marriage and to offer work permits to many young undocumented immigrants.

Once again, Obama is leading America in the midst of a crisis. The nation is slowly crawling out of a recession, we're mired in fiscal cliff talks, and we're reeling from the recent tragedy. Maybe we can all draw inspiration from some of his best quotes.

So our government is headed toward the fiscal cliff, and most people don’t even know what that means. However, they do think that we should cut spending, avoid raising the debt ceiling, and reform our entitlement programs to sustainable levels. So they reelected a president that wants to raise taxes and use 75 percent of that revenue for new spending. Because that makes sense -- in Bizarro World, at least.

So what is the fiscal cliff? Basically, legislators couldn't come to a budget agreement earlier this year, so they do what they always do -- punt. They borrowed some money and put serious fiscal ramifications in place if they didn't agree on a final budget by the end of the year. Guess what? They can't agree. So off the fiscal cliff we go -- with serious cuts in defense and other areas across the board.
