5-Year-Old Girl Trapped in Washing Machine During High-Speed Spin Cycle (VIDEO)

OMG 16

Every parent's nightmare probably involves a small child and a washing machine. Imagine turning your eyes for a moment, looking back, and suddenly catching sight of something tumbling over and over inside the washing machine -- something that looks like your kid! That's reportedly what happened in Pasadena, Texas, when a 5-year-old managed to crawl into a high-speed washing machine and tumbled around for several minutes on the spin cycle before anyone noticed.

It's unclear how the young girl ended up in the washing machine, but police say she was "tumbling pretty fast in there." Luckily, someone who walked by "saw something flopping around" and at first thought it was a dress, but then realized it was a child! I can't imagine the panic that immediately set in.

A woman had just gotten a refund on that particular machine, which wasn't working, so it's a little baffling how the machine managed to start up with the child inside. On the other hand, it's amazing you don't hear about this more often, what with a child's natural curiosity about enclosed areas and washing machines being a dangerous combination.

Police won't reveal where the parents were or who was watching the child, but reportedly the cops clearly placed the blame on the fact that the child wasn't being minded well enough.

"You've got to watch your kids. That's the bottom line," Vance Mitchell of Pasadena Police told KHOU.

The child has "extensive" injuries and is in the hospital but is expected to recover. She must have been so completely terrified in there. Something she will never, ever forget, that's for sure.

Have you ever seen your child try to crawl in a washing machine?

No, doesn't add up. How did the door close and the cycle start.

No, it really doesn't add up at all! It seems quite odd to me when you usually have to  close & click the door from the outside before it starts & it stops if the door is open. Something seems amiss in this story.

agreed...my son, being 2and curious, gets in the dryer all the time, with out permission of course..but in order for it to hurt him, someone else has to close it fully and turn it on....

How did it get turned on? These things don't start automatically.

Then again, if it were on the spin cycle, as stated, maybe it was already on, the kid climbed in, and the door got closed, so the cycle just resumed? IDK. That's fishy as hell though.

My brothers and I used to ride around in the dryers for fun when we were younger; around ages 7-11. Maybe an older sibling had something to do with it?

hmmm... this story sounds a bit suspicious to me. One, the washers that don't lock when in use are usually top loaders. Two, the front loaders usually have to be locked in order to start. How did this child get in any one of these machines and get it to work? How did she get the latch locked from the inside of the washer? This is the suspicious part. It makes no sense. Someone else had to have closed her in and locked it.

And to add to what everyone else has said...why was it SEVERAL MINUTES before she was noticed? And by who? How can you go several minutes without knowing or wondering where your small child is in a public place?!

How the heck big must that machine have been to fit a 5 yr old too (on top of what everyone above has said)?? Even the large capacity ones for bedding and things at the ones I've been to wouldn't have been big enough to fit my five yr old! Granted she's tall and skinny but even an avg sized kid seems like it wouldn't b big enough...

I am so sick of hearing about horrible, neglectful parents!  Sickening!  A child would have to be on top of washers to get inside.  Another POS parent who doesn't care about their child/children and doesn't watch over and care for them.  My sympathies to this poor child.  I hope she gets well soon and I send my sincere sympathies to her having to be raised by horrible, neglectful parents.

These are the kind of parents who just say, "Oops!"  They should be jailed!
