EMTs Smash Car Window to Save Baby But Soon Regret It (VIDEO)

There is nothing, absolutely nothing, funny about a child being left in a locked, hot car. Except this time. Emergency medical technicians in Hoboken, New Jersey responded to a 911 call about a child being left in a car, and arrived on the scene to see a baby strapped in a carrier, looking distressed, with the parents nowhere in sight. So they did what they had to do. They smashed the SUV's windows open and grabbed the baby, ready to perform emergency services. Only, it was too late. The baby was completely lifeless. In fact, it never had any life to begin with. Because it was a doll named "Todd."

Todd, wearing a little blue suit and hat, had his eyes closed and was strapped in the back of an SUV. EMTs had a "split second" to decide what to do -- so they smashed the window to save the baby doll.

Realizing their mistake, the chagrined ambulance personnel hung around until the owner returned. Her response? "Oh, no. My car!" Sheesh, no concern for Todd?!

Apparently SUV owner Kitty Mieles' 2-year-old granddaughter had left Todd perched in the seat and Kitty had failed to notice it. Good thing Todd wasn't real.

The city has agreed to pay to have the window replaced -- which is far beyond the call of duty. Hey, here's a thought. Don't leave lifeless looking baby dolls in your back seat. Sheesh.

The crew also says they are taking a "beating" by their coworkers, who think the whole thing is pretty funny. But really, they did the right thing. How were they supposed to know? Todd looks pretty convincing!

All right, everyone. Brand new lesson here today. Keep your kids' dolls out of your cars when you're not in them, ermkay?

Have you ever thought that a doll in a car might be mistaken for a kid?

No the city SHOULD replace it.

It was a doll. I understand that it's scary and important to help a child and obviously it looked real enough to those around, but some dolls do and children play with dolls like that. It's their own damn car.

I don't think anyone is at fault here. Not the grandmother, not the EMT. The city paying for the damages is entirely appropriate. If my daughter left a realistic baby doll in her car seat and an EMT broke the window to get the "baby" left in the car I might be perturbed but in the end I would be happy that they made the choice to save a child. From my former career as a cop I can tell you dark tinted windows can make the jobs of police and EMTs difficult at times. I have a truck with medium dark tint on the windows and once came out of the grocery store to find a handful of people concerned that the blanket in my daughters rear facing car seat might be a baby. Luckily it was cold that day, hence the blanket, so no one had yet decided to smash my window. Better to have had someone call the police to straighten it out than to possibly leave a child inside a vehicle to die.

So now in addition to everything else we need to remember I should tell my children not to leave their toys in the car.  This was a simple mistake and it's nice that the city is paying for the car window.  End of story.

They did the right thing, although not sure they should pay for the window.

I have never known a little girl who didn't strap a doll in a car seat or seat belt. My sons did it to their favorite stuffed toys, glad they erred on the side of action. Just today at the grocery store I saw a woman running across the lot, holding a baby by its arm! I was about to go all Mamaw Crazy on her, when I realized it was a Cabbage Patch Doll! That came real close to being my most embarrassing moment EVER!

Of COURSE they should pay for the window. It's not like it was one of those reborn dolls or something. It's obviously a doll.

This was a good story. Tired of hearing stories involving death and kids. I'm sure they acted fast without looking thoroughly through the windows for them to realize its fake. But either way, they rather save a life and thank goodness. Its weird though, dolls tend to look real nowadays and babies tend to look like dolls. Lol everyone use to think my daughter was a doll when she was tiny. People use to think i was crazy haha
