Have you seen the viral video of Japanese politician Ryutaro Nonomura sobbing during a press conference? The 47-year-old assemblyman has been accused of misusing about $30,000 in government funds during "business trips," which reportedly included more than 100 visits to a hot springs resort, but it was his unbelievably weird response that made global headlines.
During the three-hour press conference in Kobe, Nonomura managed to choke out random phrases like: "I finally became an assembly member ... with the sole purpose of changing society ... This Japan ... I want to change this society ... I have staked my life ... Don't you understand?" In between words, he wept, howled, screamed, and banged his fist on the desk in the most impressive display of emotion I've seen since Brad Pitt wailed, "WHAT'S IN THE BOOOOXXX?" at the end of Seven.
It's ... well, you sort of have to see it to believe it.
Here's the clip (it should jump you to the relevant section, but if it doesn't, the drama begins at :15):
Holy crap, right? My understanding is that was an especially bizarre performance for Japan, where politicians are typically very reserved. The public response has been hugely unsympathetic, with people posting things like "There was a kid like that when I was in elementary school. A kid who tried to explain by crying like that, lol," and "This is so embarrassing. Is he drunk?"
I hope for Nonomura's sake that he was just caught up in the moment, as opposed to having some sort of breakdown that's indicative of a larger problem. But I have to say, there's something oddly satisfying about seeing that sort of extreme, defensive reaction to a scandal. Maybe more of us should just let it ALL hang out when we're accused of doing something wrong. For instance:
I used the last of the toilet paper, and instead of actually replacing it, I just put a new roll on top of the holder. BUT YOU'VE DONE IT TOO. YOU'VE DONE IT *choke * TOOOOOO.
I ... I ... I didn't like Frozen.
Yes, okay. OKAY. I rolled my eyes and made a comical fellatio gesture behind your back when you were talking about your Paleo diet. I ... I COULDN'T HELP IT.

When the baby was crying last night, I pretended to be deeply asleep and I ... oh god, I even fake-snored.
I -- will -- never -- make -- a -- Pinterest -- school -- Valentine -- project. Because they're ridiculous. Don't you understand? DON'T YOU UNDERSTAND???
Why do you think this politician reacted in the way he did?
