A Colorado woman has the dubious honor of racking up three mugshots within a 7-day timeframe, all for the exact same crime. Unbelievably, Kimberly Micheloni, 40, was arrested for driving under the influence three separate times within one week.
I have a lot of empathy for those who struggle with substance abuse, but it's hard for me to imagine what led this woman to keep getting behind the wheel that week -- particularly since during at least one of her arrests she had a child in the vehicle with her.
Based on court records, Micheloni was first arrested on May 13. She was charged with DUI and child abuse at the time, because her 14-year-old daughter was riding in the car with her. She was arrested for the second time on May 14, and for the third time on May 20.
Micheloni was also charged with careless driving and two counts of contempt of court (I'm guessing that was more for the "willful failure to obey an order of the court" part of the law rather than an outburst in the courtroom), and she remains jailed on $225,000 bond.
In this case, I'd say jail is definitely where she belongs and I hope she doesn't make bail, because she clearly has a serious problem. I know addiction leads people to make terrible decisions, but if being arrested -- twice! -- wasn't enough to keep her from driving under the influence less than a week after she was first pulled over, I don't know what would stop her from doing it a fourth time.
Micheloni gave a jailhouse interview in which she claimed she'd been taking prescription medication under a doctor's order at the time of her arrests. Who knows, maybe that defense will actually lower her sentence, but I'm thinking she won't be legally driving for a very, very long time.
Here's the clip:
I feel badly for this woman. I'm not excusing or condoning her actions in any way, but I hope this is her rock bottom and that she's beginning the work that can lead her towards long term sobriety.
Have you ever heard of someone getting 3 DUIs in one week?
