The world is mourning the death of a true literary genius. Author, poet, and celebrated civil rights activist Maya Angelou died today at her North Carolina home. She was 86.
The Pulitzer Prize nominee, whose most famous works include the memoir I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings and the critically-acclaimed collection of poems, Just Give Me a Cool Drink of Water 'Fore I Diiie, was battling health problems for some time and recently cancelled an appearance in which she was slated to receive yet another deserved honor.
Maya was an absolute class act who will forever be remembered for the contributions she made as a writer and African-American female writer. She'll go down in history as the first African-American woman to write a best-seller.
