Early on Monday morning, a 15-year-old Texas girl made an emergency call from her home. By the time the authorites arrived, she was in the front yard with a gunshot wound. Her 11-year-old brother was also wounded, and upon searching the house, found their parents' bodies.
Police believe that Karim Kamdar, 46, shot his wife Nikhat Kamdar, 37, to death before shooting the children and eventually himself, ending his own life.
The children were life-flighted to a nearby hospital where both underwent surgery and are now in stable condition. Both are expected to recover physically, but I doubt the psychological and emotional damage will ever truly heal.
An investigation is underway, but police believe the shooting was the result of a domestic dispute. Last year, Karim was forced out of business after renting and operating the Superway Food store in Richmond for 12 years. His wife owned and operated a day care called American Heritage Academy.
The two kids are still hospitalized, where they are reportedly also receiving counseling. They are under the care of Child Protective Services, while authorities try to track down relatives in Pakistan and India.
What a tragic story! In one terrible morning, they were shot by the person they're supposed to be able to trust the most, and they lost their parents. Now there's possibility they may have to move halfway around the world to live with relatives? They've been robbed of the rest of their childhoods, and it's heartbreaking.
We will probably never know what exactly went through Karim Kamdar's head for him to justify his actions, but his children will live with the consequences of them forever.
