Those first days when a new baby is in the home are some of the most precious you're ever going to have. So imagine a couple's horror when their 5-day-old infant went missing from his bassinet in the middle of the night, apparently snatched right out from under the new parents as they slept in the same room as their little boy. It's totally unfathomable. What could have happened to this baby?! It happened in Beloit, Wisconsin, and authorities say that the parents are cooperating with the investigation.
The home reportedly had no signs of a break-in. Not only were the parents, 18-year-old Brianna Marshall and 23-year-old Bruce Powell, home at the time of the presumed abduction, but two other family members, the brother of Brianna and a great-grandmother, were also in the home at the time.
One of the relatives, Kristen Smith, the baby's aunt, was arrested 170 miles away from the home on the day Kayden went missing -- YET police now say she is not a suspect in the disappearance. She had baby clothes in the car but no sign of the baby.
In fact, there were reportedly eight people in the home during the 12 hours that the then-5-day-old baby went missing. All have been interviewed, but police still have no suspects.
I can't think of a more terrible and bizarre thing than having your baby snatched out from underneath you, with so many people in the home. The parents must know they are under a microscope too.
Kayden is described as African-American, 20 inches long, 6 pounds, with brown hair and eyes. Beliot police, the Wisconsin Bureau of Criminal Identification, and the FBI are all working on the case. Police are reportedly going door to door looking for the baby. A neighbor told a local station:
They're looking for the baby. They looked inside a microwave oven out there, they looked in my tool-box, they searched my trailer, searched my car.
Anyone who has information regarding Kayden’s whereabouts, or any other information pertaining to this case, is strongly urged to contact the Amber Tipline at (608) 758-8477 or the Rock County Communications Center at (608) 757-2244.
Let's hope this baby is found and soon!
What do you think happened?
UPDATE: Baby Kayden has been found! According to authorities, Kayden was discovered in a tote bag outside a gas station in Iowa, near an interstate. Although the temperatures were freezing, the baby is in perfect health. Kayden was not far from where his aunt, Kristen Smith, was arrested earlier on an unrelated charge. Police would not comment on Smith, who is now just considered a "person of interest." Police did concede that perhaps the baby had been abandoned once the news of his abduction went out. The focus is now on getting the baby back to his parents, who are overjoyed at this news. Kudos to all authorities who worked so quickly and competently to find this precious bundle!
