Nadya Suleman, who you probably know better as "Octomom," is facing some serious charges from the L.A. County District Attorney's Office after being suspected of welfare fraud back in March. TMZ is reporting that she's been charged with three felony counts of welfare fraud and now faces more than five years in prison if convicted on all counts. Whoa.
The D.A. claims Octomom failed to report nearly $30,000 in earnings between January 1-June 30, 2013. She's accused of failing to disclose money that she got from personal appearances and residuals from videos (which TMZ oh-so-helpfully points out is a "masturbation video" ... lovely).
And get this: The D.A. is asking the judge to set bail at $25,000. Wow.
As we reported back in March, California law states that Octomom would have had to make less than $119,000 to receive the food stamps and other benefits that she and her 14 kids have been receiving. But apparently, she's raked in $200K last year.
Sure, it's horrible as it is to think that she could get locked up for YEARS, and who knows what would become of her kids? But if it's true that she really did attempt to manipulate a system that's set up to help people who are truly in need, perhaps she had it coming to her. And maybe this is, in a way, some sort of twisted, karmic retribution related to her desperate hunt for fame. Ultimately, our hearts go out more to her 14 children than to Nadya, because they're the ones who will undoubtedly suffer the most ... even as a result of the mere stress stemming from this situation.
'Course that doesn't change the fact that this news is just plain sad and icky ... Then again, what do we expect when it comes to any news involving this woman?
How do you feel about Octomom potentially facing 5 years in jail?
