Former Beauty Queen Shot Dead by Thieves in Front of Her 5-Year-Old

Sasha Brown-Worsham Heartbreaking

Monica SpearIn a horrifying story out of Venezuela, a 29-year-old former Miss Venezuela Monica Spear and her husband, Henry Thomas Berry, 39, were killed in a carjacking. They were shot dead for "resisting" the robbers who attempted to take things from them as they sat in their disabled car. Perhaps most horrifying of all, they were shot to death in front of their 5-year-old daughter who was also shot in the leg, but is expected to survive.

What the hell is wrong with this world?

The family lives full-time in the United States but was vacationing in Venezuela. Some are implying that the robbers had set up a trap, disabling their vehicle by puncturing their tires.

The attack happened around 10:30 p.m. when the once-couple's car hit "a sharp object that had been placed on the highway." Soon after two tow trucks arrived, and the robbers came after the car once it had been lifted onto one of the trucks. The terrified Spear and Berry locked themselves inside and the robbers opened fire.

It's just horrifying.

In that situation it's almost impossible to know what you would do. Sure, we have all been told not to resist robbery and to just give them what they want. But if armed men were coming toward you and your former spouse and your young child were in the car, what would you do? Most of us would lock the doors, too, right?

The thought of that poor child in the back witnessing something so scarring and awful is almost too much to bear. She will never forget what she saw, and though she is expected to recover, she now has no mother or father.

Caracas has one of the highest murder rates in the world and is notorious for violent crimes. But even so, there is nothing "normal" about this. My heart breaks for that little girl and I can't even imagine the fear her parents must have felt in their final seconds.

It's too awful to contemplate.

Do you think you would have locked the doors?
