Mom Accused of Beating Toddler to Death Over Potty Training Accident

Horrifying 30

Brittney MasseyMy heart hurts. A 2-year-old has been beaten to death, and cops say it was her mother who killed the toddler for doing something every child has done at least once (if not more). Destinee Massey's supposed "crime"? The toddler peed on the floor.

For that cops say 23-year-old Brittney Massey beat her daughter within an inch of her life. The little girl died later at a hospital.

Yes, her parents took her to the hospital.

It may be better than the mom accused of killing her child in a similar potty training mishap a few years ago and then sat down to eat pizza. But I'm having a hard time seeing this as "remorse" or "caring" for the little girl.

It turns out it didn't help. According to police, Destinee's father first came home from work at 12:30 a.m. on Wednesday to find his daughter limp, groaning, and gasping for breath. Michael Miles, who is not under investigation, is said to have asked to take the girl to the hospital then and there, but cops say Brittney Massey said no. It wasn't until 8 a.m. that the hospital trip finally happened.

By that time, it was too late.

Now I'm a mom. I've potty trained. I know it's frustrating. But I'm really finding it hard to summon any kind of sympathy for actions this heinous.

Kids pee on the floor! That's what they do! Basically, it sounds like this child was killed for being a child!

What's more, I'm loathe to say that taking an abused child to the hospital mitigates the abuse itself in any circumstance -- even one where the child survives thanks to medical intervention. The fact is, if you don't hurt your child, you don't have to go to the hospital. Period.

If anything, the hospital trip here sounds less like it was about the girl than it was about an alleged abuser suddenly worrying she'd be in trouble.

And trouble she is in. Brittany Massey is facing charges of murder, battery resulting in death, and neglect of a dependent resulting in death.

If any of the allegations are true, I have to say I hope they throw the book at her -- trip to the hospital or no trip to the hospital. This little girl needed someone who would care for her from the beginning, not after a major beating.

What punishment fits the crime here?

The dad needs to be charged as well!

The woman said no hospital, AND HE LISTENED TO HER?? Why didnt he call 911 right then and there, or grab her up and run out the door?

What if she could have been saved?

He enabled this woman by not reporting the child's injuries that fucking second!

I am so sick of people making excuses for enablers of child abuse.

I dont care what your situation is, if a child is in danger, you get off your sorry ass and help that child! Period!

Was coming to say the same thing the4mutts already did.  He shouldn't have even ASKED to take her to the hospital.  He should have ran right out the door with her or called 911 immediately.  At the very least he needs to be charged as an accomplice.

Agree with the4mutts!! Also, life in prison for her, a long, long, long sentence for him.

Wow, I'm tried of people doing this. Some people shouldn't be able to have kids period.

Someone should beat her within an inch of her life and then wait 8 hours to take her to the hospital!!!  That poor baby!!!

If she is beating this child for a peeing accident, one can only imagine what else this child endured for other actions. This DEFINITELY wasn't the first time this pariah did something to her. And the father?! Stand up for your child, you pathetic piece of…Both of them need to be held accountable for the life lost, regardless of the hospital visit. That visit was mute by then so why allow it to matter now? People disgust me, especially people that have children and do NOT deserve them! If there is ever an argument for eugenics, here's another example to use.

That woman's face. I just want to punch her in it. With a brick. Or maybe the front end of a truck.

I think Brittney has beat Destinee before, I can guarantee this is not the first time. While potty training is not easy sometimes the child is not ready. You have to take a step back and try at a later time.

When Brittney goes to prison they need to do a complete hysterectomy on her. I don't care what Destinee did she didn't deserve any beatings. Desinee's father should have been smart enough to say," I'm taking her and that is that." I hope he realizes he might have saved Destinee's life if only he had been a father and loved and protected his daughter.

I hope the judge throws the book at both of the parents. However they will probably get 5 to 10 years in jail, if that. (first offence, good behavior). Knowing this makes me wonder why God chose to ever give these parents a child at all. I pray they never get another one.

R.I.P. little Destinee
