News legend and newsmaker Barbara Walters is at it again ... For the last time ever, as she's retiring next year, Walters has released the names of nine of her 10 Most Fascinating People of the Year. (The top name will be revealed on her annual special, airing December 18 at 9:30 p.m. EST.) To say she's outdone herself on her way out the door is an understatement. It's apparent Baba was looking to stir the pot and have us squawking about her choices all the way into '14. Because, seriously, hold onto your hat for some of the wacky picks on this list ...
While she threw bones to obvious choices like Hollywood sweetheart Jennifer Lawrence and Good Morning America anchor Robin Roberts, who is battling a rare blood disorder, and the royal newborn Prince George, Barbara also decided to fete Miley Cyrus, Kim Kardashian and Kanye West ("known together as KimYe!"), and the breakout stars from the reality show Duck Dynasty. WTH?!
I get that it is most fascinating people of the year. Not most talented, most admirable, most worthwhile. But still. Why in the world give more attention and credit to people who are already overhyped, overexposed, and worst of all, contributing nothing of value to culture? The crappiest part of it to me is that they're taking up spots that could've been handed over to fascinating people who actually have something of value to offer our culture ...
Like Texas senator-turned-gubernatorial candidate Wendy Davis, who became one of the fastest rising stars in politics after she stood on her feet during an 11-hour filibuster intended to stop an anti-abortion bill. Or uber-talented actress Kerry Washington, who after years of doing awesome work in supporting parts is kicking ass in her breakout role as Olivia Pope on Scandal. What about Angelina Jolie for the impact she made on preemptive breast cancer treatment this year? Facebook COO Sheryl Sandberg who got us talking about Lean-ing In? And okay, so, her son made the list, but Kate Middleton herself is by FAR one of the most fascinating people in the world without a doubt.
ANY of these women are more deserving of the "Most Fascinating" label over someone who twerked on stage in plastic underwear and people who are in the business of unapologetically making their personal lives their business. Ugh. Barbara, we expected more from you! I get that you wanted to go out on a high note, and that may be the case when it comes to ratings, but otherwise, this year's severely lacking, misguided list really feels like a new low.
What do you think about Barbara's inclusion of Kimye, Miley, the cast of Duck Dynasty, etc.? Who do you think should've made the list who didn't?
