You've probably heard and seen countless surprise military marriage proposals that have taken place in an airport, often when the serviceman or woman is returning home to their love. It's just one of those things that proves to be completely romantic and awesome time and again and just makes sense. Well, to one U.S. Navy sailor Dylan Ruffer and his high school sweetheart Madison Meinhardt, what made sense was to tie the knot yesterday in Reno-Tahoe International Airport, just moments after Ruffer returned from an 11-month deployment off the coast of war-torn Syria.
The pair had actually planned to get hitched last month but ended up having to postpone their "I do"s when Ruffer's deployment was extended, according to KOLO-TV. In turn, Meinhardt decided to see if they could get married at the airport ... because Ruffer wanted to "get married the moment he laid eyes on her after returning from his Navy assignment." Ahhh, cue the sighs, awws, and waterworks!
Thankfully, Meinhardt got a lot of support for their spur of the moment switcharoo! The Peppermill casino gave Meinhardt a spa package so she could prepare, while the Eldorado casino donated a honeymoon suite and limousine to the couple. The airport's catering prepared food for the reception in a decorated section of the baggage claim area. And in the end, Dylan and Madison were able to get married under a tulle-covered arch in front of the arrivals escalators with more than 200 invited guests and a DJ!
Of the end result, Madison said, "We were expecting a little wedding in the corner. This is definitely more than we could have ever asked for." Aww!
How awesome is it that the community was able to help this couple pull off what could only be described as an utterly unique, completely memorable occasion on such short notice? Props to them all! And a huge congrats to the newlyweds!
