Fans of David Herman may want to take a long, hot shower today after they hear what their favorite rock and roll DJ has been up to. The 77-year-old retired radio host was arrested in the Virgin Islands this week on suspicion of soliciting sex ... from a 6-year-old girl! Thank goodness the 36-year-old mom Herman allegedly thought was going to offer up her daughter was really a cop, huh?
If you're a good law-abiding citizen, police sting operations may leave a bad taste in your mouth. I've heard some even argue that they verge on entrapment, which violates the rights of everyday American citizens.
But then cases like this come up.
According to the authorities, the retired DJ who once entertained the likes of John Lennon, Bruce Springsteen, and Bob Dylan on New York's WNEW didn't realize he was chatting online with a cop posing as a mom the whole time. He allegedly purchased airplane tickets for the "mother and 6-year-old daughter" to fly from New York's LaGuardia Airport to St. Croix where they were supposed to meet him. Cops charge that Herman planned to have sex with the 6-year-old there and quote Herman saying:
I find girls that age incredibly sexy, soft, and their innocence is also a huge turn-on for me. Age 6 is the perfect time to start her being loved that way.
Folks, this is the kind of thing police sex stings prevent. Guys who think that way from actually getting hold of real children.
Good, law-abiding citizens may be upset by the concept of cops setting up traps for folks, but if you think about it, if you're good and law-abiding, you won't get trapped. You have nothing to worry about! It's only folks like a 77-year-old man seeking sex from a 6-year-old who have to worry.
On the flip side, what if these stings didn't exist? Who has to worry? Every parent.
As a mother, I'll come right out and say it: the more cops online tricking pedophiles, the better. They're keeping our kids safe.
Herman, by the way, is facing charges of attempting to transport a minor in interstate commerce with the intent she engage in sexual activity. If convicted, the charge carries a $250,000 fine and mandatory minimum of 10 years in prison and a maximum penalty of life in prison, which would mean he'd be far away from kids for a good, long time.
What do you think the punishment should be in this case?
