Some college students experienced the happy accident of their life recently when a teaching assistant mistakenly sent the class seriously raunchy photos of herself instead of math answers. The incident happened at the University of Iowa and the TA was apparently having a private (like, really private) cyber chat with her boyfriend, and somehow she sent students screenshots from the convo, where they're, uh, doing stuff to themselves.
But what makes this whole uncomfy, awful thing all the more uncomfy and awful is how the woman handled the situation the next day in class.
Apparently, the poor woman walked in and acted like absolutely nothing happened at all! No comment on the text; no sarcastic joke on what transpired; nothing. She just rolled into class at 7:30 and started mathing it up. Students, understandably, were shocked, and they took to Twitter to express themselves. One purported student tweeted, "How the [EXPLETIVE] is my math teacher in class right now." Another message said, "... she walked in and everyone went dead silent." And yet another student told the website, Total Frat Move: "The TA was teaching her 7:30 discussion session this morning trying to act like nothing happened but clearly very rattled. No one said anything about it but it was just extremely awkward."
I mean, you have to feel bad for the woman. Clearly, this was an accident and she was mortified, but the situation probably would have been slightly less awkward had she quickly addressed it and moved on. Wouldn't have been an easy thing to do, but it would have been better than just keeping silent.
God speed, Teaching Assistant. I bet the end of the semester can't get here fast enough. And hey, maybe do a double check the next time you send your students ... anything.
What would you have done if something like this happened to you?
