Professor DawkinsFamous scientist, writer, and professor Richard Dawkins revealed in a new autobiography that he was the victim of ‘mild pedophilia’ as a child, and that it was no big deal. He then went on record with Time Magazine saying, “I am very conscious that you can’t condemn people of an earlier era by the standards of ours.”
Dawkins claims that as a child at boarding school, one of the schoolmasters “pulled me on his knee and put his hand inside my shorts.” After conferring with other boys after the fact, he discovered that he wasn’t the only one. While he admits that it was “extremely disagreeable,” he doesn’t believe the man’s “touching up” of him and his friends caused any lasting harm.
Well thank God he survived that just fine, and even more so that he can speak for the innermost thoughts and emotions of those other abused boys.
I just … I can’t ... I mean … what the what??
How can anyone defend any pedophilia in any way, shape, or form? Dawkins to took to Twitter this week to defend his comments, saying, “’Mild touching up’ is bad. Raping 8-year-old wife to death is worse. Worse? That’s putting it mildly. Quantitative judgment vs black/white.”
So now mild pedophilia is bad? I thought it did no lasting harm? Make up your mind, Professor.
Furthermore, does this sound to anyone else like he might as well be saying it’s ok for a man to slap his wife around, so long as he doesn’t break her nose or kill her or anything? She might find the episodes disagreeable, but they won’t do her any lasting harm, and she’ll get over it. She may even be grateful that she wasn’t the victim of worse abuse!
Let’s make something patently clear. It’s never ok to abuse a child -- sexually, physically, verbally, or emotionally. Yes, there is a spectrum of abuse, all the way from name-calling or telling a kid something is their fault when it isn’t, to rape and murder. It is all bad, and all indefensible.
Just because kids grow up and survive doesn’t make abuse of any form or degree “no big deal.”
Do you think that ‘mild pedophilia’ is a big deal?
