Is the Zimmerman Verdict Dividing Our Nation? (VIDEO)

Moms Matter Google Hangout

When George Zimmerman was found not guilty of murder in the shooting death of Trayvon Martin, much of the nation reacted in shock.

Emotions have been running high, with some staging protests and many others speaking out about their feelings online.

The question we ask today in our Moms Matter Google Hangout: Could this trial be a catalyst to try and bridge the racial divide in our nation -- or is it pushing us farther apart?

If you want to learn more about the topics we discussed in this hangout or just catch up on reactions to the trial, here's a quick rundown:

-The basic argument many are having online is over whether the verdict exposed inherent racism in the justice system or whether there was simply a weak case against George Zimmerman. CNN analyzed the race factor in the Zimmerman trial.

-Kelly Wickham of the blog Mocha Momma wrote a powerful post about those who've stayed silent in the wake of the Zimmerman trial. "I see a lot of people whom I consider friends, many of them with powerful Twitter accounts with amazing reach, simply giving Trayvon Martin and all the conversations surrounding his death a wide berth," she wrote. It's a great post. Check it out.

-Rebecca Woolf wrote about the Zimmerman trials from the perspective of a white, middle-class mother. As she puts it in the post's title, "We Need to Talk About Race." After receiving an onslaught of comments, she wrote a followup post the next day in response to what was said.

-Trayvon Martin's parents spoke out about the verdict in an interview with ABC News. I was very impressed by their poise and desire to forgive in the wake of what was obviously devastating news.

Now, my question for you. Is it possible for this trial to be a catalyst to bring the nation closer together, as Trayvon's parents wish?

Also, have you told your kids about the verdict? Will you? What will you tell them?

I don't think the Zimmerman verdict is dividing our nation. I think the notion that his actions that night must be race related divides. I think that the case even went so public because the media played up the racial difference divides. I think calling GZ a "white" Hispanic to make it appear more racial divides. I think that people who constantly assign race to everything for a reason for any sort of dislike or disagreement divides.

I don't think it is per sea the verdict. I think it is the race baiters, the media and celebrities and to include this website that believe that black men are being hunted down everyday by white men and who also did not watch the trial and think Trayvon was just walking down the street and didn't touch Zimmerman. That is what is dividing the country. We also have a president who automatically takes sides and blames the white guy before getting the facts. And the other thing is that no one in the black community wants to talk about the genocide within their own community to include pregnancy, drug use, HIV cases and murder rates.

If the Zimmerman verdict is dividing our nation, it's because the blacks WANT it divided.

It also doesn't help that your own stir writer Sasha, asked fr more Violent protests and said there should be more because people are angry and sometimes violence will wake people up. But all you guys had her do, after burner outs complaints is "change the title and remove the parts from her article". She still hasn't apologized, and I suspect even if she did she wouldn't mean t. Oh BTW, a WI man was severely beaten by several black men, all shouting "this is for Trayvon". I bet you are happy about that Sasha.

Black people are twelve percent of the population and commit half the murders. White boys are far more likely to be killed or murdered by black assailants than black by any other race. Those are statistics. The moral fiber of the black family has been shredded by those who intentionally destroyed it with welfare, abortion, and politics. The black divorce rate was always FAR lower than the white divorce rate, and blacks enjoyed a more connected family, before welfare and abortion became the way of life. Black men were metaphorically castrated by the Democrat push to racistly crush the black family and buy votes, and eventually rend the very fabric of the American way of life, in order to push through their "secret" communist agenda, and ultimately for the sake of the almighty dollar. Black men are still in chains, and their own party holds the keys. These young men grow up without fathers, with promiscuous mothers, impoverished communities, and broken hearts. It is a criminal shame, when the black family and community were so strong before.

Oh, and Holder and Obama are what is dividing this nation along the race line. May they burn in hell for their crimes against us.

bills, Sasha is a mere witless cog in a large and churning machine.

Tuffymama, im just curious. Where did you get these statistics ? Because they are far from accurate. Stay away from wikipedia, and pick up some scholarly articles and journals . Those are where the accurate statistics are.

We are divided because of the race baiter's pure and simple.  If this case has highlighted anything about racism its the fact that you are allowed to openly be racist if you are of color.  If your mother is Hispanic and you are born with light skin and did something the race baiters don't like its perfectly acceptable to misrepresent you and make things up.  There is zero evidence George Zimmerman is a racist!  The only one throwing around disturbing racial and homophobic terms are people associated with Trayvon Martin, and Martin himself.
