Trayvon Martin’s Friend Rachel Jeantel Gets Full College Scholarship From Total Stranger (VIDEO)

Love It! 43

rachel jeantelOne of the most dramatic parts of the George Zimmerman trial was the two-day testimony of the friend Trayvon Martin was talking with on the phone just before he was killed. Rachel Jeantel had a grueling time on the stand. On the first day she got testy with Zimmerman's lawyer, Don West, during his badgering cross-examination. She was forced to admit that some of the testimony she'd given to police had been false. Afterward she was the subject of jeers throughout the Internet.

When we met her during her interview with Piers Morgan, though, we met a woman who had grown up with a debilitating overbite who considered Trayvon Martin one of her few loyal friends. One person watching that interview was so moved, he offered Jeantel a scholarship: Radio host Tom Joyner.

Joyner says he was especially moved when Jeantel told Morgan that she and Martin had talked about their futures. That got him wondering about Jeantel's future -- what are her hopes and dreams? On his radio show Tuesday morning he said:

If there is something she wants to do, I want to help ... I will help you get tutors to get out of high school, tutors to pass the SAT. I will give you a full-ride scholarship to any HBCU [historically black college or university].

Though 19, Jeantel has not yet graduated from high school, though she says she has a 3.0 G.P.A. Joyner later said, "it's going to take some work, first of all, to get her a high school diploma." So it sounds like Joyner is signing up for a significant project. But good for him.

If Joyner can keep his commitment, and Jeantel does finally get her diploma and attends (and graduates from) college, then at least one good thing will have come from the whole depressing Trayvon Martin case. It won't make up for his death, but I think Martin would be happy for his friend.

I wish every struggling young woman like Jeantel could get this much help. I hope it all works out for her.

Do you think Joyner should be helping Jeantel this much?

why does it have to be an HBCU?....lets hope college can rid her of her homophobia she displayed in her morgan interview and she can quit calling people "cracker"..i hope it helps her life and family

I am happy for Ms. Jeantel, she desperately needs to educate herself. I wish her the best of luck.

Great that she has the opportunity for a higher education...not so great that black people are so incredibly racist and she has to choose a hbcu and not a " cracker" school.

We paid for my sister to go to college twice and she flunked both times.  She has also gone back four other times that either she got money from the government or other family members and she flunked out all those times too.  She is now 30 and paying for her own education and wouldn't you know she is passing.  We have given a lot of 'free rides' to help people and it never does.  If you really want to help someone you should start by teaching them how to help themselves.  And this girl needs to learn to read cursive before she even thinks about going to college.  I also find it disgusting that people want to help this girl and no one  cares if she gets a pay off but its okay to intimidate a publisher out of a book deal for one of the jurors because you don't like what she has to say.  The stir is all about showing bias on this case.

How incredibly ignorant can some of you be? Just because she said Martin called Zimmerman a cracks your judging her? I'm sure you who are talking crap have been guilty at least once in your life of being racist/prejudice. And if you read correctly, she didn't say what college, the guy who offered her the scholarship did. Like the author said, if something good can come from all this...good!

Andy...i have never called someone a racial slur. Not once. I also dont expect special treatment simply because im white. I also dont think its is acceptable for a school or anything else to be open only to one race, or for them to be celebrated for having admitted only one race at some time in the past.

Yup I have never called anyone a racial slur in my life.  Having prejudice and throwing around racial slurs are very different.  You are right that all of us have prejudice but none of us need to share it.  To be honest this woman also seems like she is against gays.  My boyfriend who is black and has lived in Florida thinks this woman is a racist not just for what she said but how she said it.  He had friends of many different races and has a best friend that lives there that has never used the word 'cracker' or 'cracka.'  Sounds to me Andy like you shouldn't be throwing around words like ignorant. Didn't you hear?  Only ignorant people use racial slurs. And if your condoning it you should question your own intelligence.

Figures. Not surprised. If she were white, she wouldn't get shit. Last time I checked, white people don't don't get their own month (yes, I'm talking about February being Black History month), we don't receive scholarships just because we're white (because somehow if they had scholarships out there for only white ppl like they do for blacks and Hispanics it would be considered racist), we can't even get our own channel. White Entertainment Television, anyone? Also, I'd love to know why it's ok for them to call us crackers, but if I were to say 'the N word', that would be unacceptable. Black people are more racist than anyone any day.
