Desperate Parents Know Who Killed Son But Can't Get Cops to Listen

Detroit PoliceImagine knowing the names of the men who killed your son and not being able to do anything about it. This is life for the parents of Jacob Kudla, a teenager shot to death in Detroit, Michigan, last year. The Kudlas say they know who killed their son and his friend. They know who beat him up, put him in the trunk of a car, took him out to a field, and shot their child. But there's nothing they can do about it.

Because Detroit police and prosecutors have told them they won't be prosecuting! Apparently Bernie and Vergie Kudla are supposed to be happy that the men who killed their son are behind bars, awaiting trial on other crimes.

But is that really enough?

The cops and prosecutors say it comes down to not enough evidence to build a good case.

The Kudlas claim this comes down to money -- it's known across the country that Detroit is broke, and these parents think their son's case is getting the shaft because it would cost money to bring the criminals to justice. They say there is plenty of evidence.

It's a whole lot of he said-she said at the moment.

But the question of whether it's enough to catch a criminal on another case remains.

Sure, it's comforting to know killers are behind bars, so they can't kill again.

But Jacob Kudla is still dead, as is his 17-year-old friend Jourdan Bobbish, who was also murdered that night. Parents lost sons. Parents want the people who made their worst nightmares come true to pay for that, not for other crimes, but specifically for that.

They want justice for THEIR loved ones.

Is that really too much to ask?

Is it really wrong that they're pushing these police and prosecutors on this?

This isn't to say that there is any malfeasance in the Detroit legal system. I'm well aware that it is often up to prosecutors to do the best they can to get criminals behind bars, and because they're bound by the law on how to procure evidence, that sometimes means indicting on counts other than what they'd really like to, at least in their hearts.

But where the cops and DAs have hundreds of cases that they need to focus on, parents like Bernie and Vergia Kudla have just one. They can ... and should ... keep on fighting. Because who else will?

Do you think it's fair to make these parents accept that their sons' killers are behind bars on other charges? What would you do in their shoes?

Unfortunately I can see both sides. I feel horrible for the victims families but since the killers are already behind bars and with Detroit being broke it is not feasible for them to expel resources on killers who are already off the street. That being said, sadly, this case is a lower priority compared to someone who was murdered and the killer was still on the lose.

Typical police and legal system now a days. It's only gonna get worse.

How do the parents know that those are then men that killed their sons? I mean come on really? If police started to arrest at every finger pointing the jail would see 10x more people then they have now. They have to have solid evidence. It's sad what they are going threw but you just can't make a claim and have the police listen and charge two people with murder without some kind of proof they had involvement.

I agree with LostSoul88. Unfortunately unless they have some irrefutable smoking gun, they can't just make someone get arrested for murder. When a justice system is pushed for immediate repercussion, innocent people get hurt. They need to stay calm and see what happens with the pending case. Keeping gathering information, but be patient. The long-term odds of good case will be better.

The problem I see with this (while I do see and understand both sides) is that these other charges that they are behind bars for, are they going to serve the same amount of time as they would if they were convicted on two charges of murder 1? Or will they be out on parole in a year or two?

I've noticed you seem to write a lot of anti-cop articles.  I agree with Lost Soul.  These days, anyone can call a news station and get their side of the story reported as factual news.  I feel for this family; I just think there probably isn't enough evidence to go to trial.  The article of this is misleading- it's not that police won't listen.  It's just that there is a lack of evidence.  Way to continue your anti-police propaganda, though.

My son was also murdered, and although the police know who did it and had all the evidence they needed, failed to pick up the shooter. In Honolulu after my son was shot in the back the police treated my son like he was less than human, I mean they even knew who the shooter was and for what ever reason that I still don't understand they didn't even pick this guy up for questioning. I fail to understand why some cases are like this. I'm not sure about this one, but I know in my sons case they had the evidence and refused or failed to act on it. They allowed him to leave the island to possibly kill someone elses child.

Were these boys gang bangers?  If so murder and death are a way of life.  That would be a reason for thecops not tocare much.

@adoption2013, how DARE you?  HOW DARE you even suggest that the victims are responsible for their murder?

Well, I know for a fact what it feels like, My niece was also murdered and it seemed like the cops was not trying to do anything about it, my sister got an attorney and guess what???? it seems now that it is all coming out the gun the three men had who shot her, belonged to the police dept!!  the same dept she was working as an informant for!!!!   so it goes to show, cops will cover up when they can to protect their own asses, they may not have pulled the trigger, but they owned the gun she was killed with. soundl like a set up to me!!!!    not all cops are good. statistics show there are more dirty cops out there then good!!!  read up on it before you say all cops are good!  CAUSE THEY ARE NOT!!!!
