Sen. Wendy Davis' Anti-Abortion Bill Filibuster Saves the Day for Women (VIDEO)

Hero 41

A bill that would have closed nearly all of the abortion clinics in Texas has been voted down, thanks to the heroic stamina of Sen. Wendy Davis, a Democrat who decided to speak for 13 hours straight -- with no bathroom breaks and no leaning on anything -- in order to stop the vote on the bill, called the Texas SB5. The bill had to be voted on at a certain time, and because of Davis's filibuster, it was registered too late to be counted. Yeah, I don't really understand all of this stuff either, but let's look into it.

A filibuster is when a group of people or one person talks so long during a legislative process that it disrupts or even stops a vote on a given matter. It seems like it would be easy enough to put limits on how long someone could talk, but then I guess people would just band together and take turns filibustering. So they can do it as long as they follow very strict rules.

Davis was trying to stop the anti-abortion bill, which would have closed most of the state's abortion clinics, ban abortions after 20 weeks, and turn what abortion clinics were left into ambulatory surgical centers with severe limitations. Republicans behind the bill say it's for the safety of women -- but none of them have ever clearly stated how these changes would produce safer abortions. They sure would make it more difficult to get them at all, though.

Hundreds of people flooded the state capitol protesting the bill and backing Wendy Davis. They lined the balconies of the capitol, clapping and cheering. While Davis didn't quite reach her 13-hour mark -- she was stopped because of a dubious break in the rules -- the bill still didn't pass. Davis is certainly a hero to those who want to keep abortion legal and accessible!

Have you been following the Texas abortion debate? Here's Davis doing her crazy but heroic filibuster:

I'm so torn on this - I am pro-life myself, but unfortunately I understand on a personal level the circumstances that force women into feeling that abortion is their only option. I wish there were enough adoptive families for all unwanted babies, I wish people who couldn't afford kids would not get pregnant in the first place - but there are not and they won't. So who suffers? The kids born into situations where they are not loved, not fed, etc. Which is the worse evil? You have to be pro-life, not just pro-birth. I volunteer at a crisis pregnancy center and a maternity home for teen girls, and my heart has been broken so much over this.

I hope one day it passes... abortion is disgusting especially at 20 weeks cause a baby can survive out of the womb at 20 weeks, I've seen it happen. You don't want to get pregnant either use birth control or don't open your legs. I understand if you were raped and got pregnant or if you had a medical condition or something like that to where you couldn't carry the baby and survive... but other than that it should be illegal since it is illegal to murder somebody abortion is murder, at 8 weeks the baby has a heartbeat that means its alive... so an abortion kills the baby which sounds like murder to me...

Kelticmom, it's refreshing to see someone who is pro-life look at the other side of an issue. You get a huge high five from me. You're doing a wonderful thing helping those women.

@kelticmom, while I'm pro-choice, I can respect someone like you who realizes the difficulties and actually tries to help, not just force their opinion on others. Kudos to Davis, this is a politician who actually sacrificed (no bathroom breaks?) to help so many women. This legislation would only lead to back room or over the border abortions, and I can't see why anyone would want that.

Kelticmom is 100% correct.  You can't be pro-life unless you're pro-ALL lives, including those who need to "use birth control or don't open your legs."  Maybe we as a society need to start supporting EVERYONE.  I am pro-life, too, but I am also pro-support those in need.  Until we really support these women, without judgement or condemnation, abortion will remain legal, and it must.  Too often, we condemn people for the situations they find themselves in, but we do nothing to help them change those situations or help them improve their lives.  I find THAT disgusting.

I think it's terrible that one person can completely stop the democratic legislation process. Maybe that's part of why most legislative bodies never get anything done.

:( Doesn't save the day for ALL women.

A victory for Texas women.  While I personally don't believe that abortions should occur after viability (with exceptions in the case of life of the mother or horrible genetic mutations), my main problem with this bill would have been that it essentially eliminated safe abortions in Texas. That provision of the bill is in direct violation of the "undue burden" clause upheld by the Supreme Court in the case of Casey v. Planned Parenthood (1992). If this bill would have passed, I'm sure it would have been appealed up to the Supreme Court anyway.

So just because some women believe abortion should be outlawed based on their relgious beliefs means we should all force women to follow it?

If you don't like abortions, don't get one. But don't force a woman to carry a baby to term if she doesn't want to such as in case of rape. You're against abortons but I also bet you're against more funding for the welfare program. Will you be willing to pay more taxes to support all the "unwanted" babies? Dont bring adoption into this either, you try to be beat and raped then tell me you will be willign to relieve that every single day for 9 plus months.
