Kate Middleton’s New Portrait Is Almost as Bad as the First One

kate middeltonWhen Kate Middleton's official portrait was unveiled in January, most everyone was taken aback by its rottenness. The artist made the Duchess look 53, when she's only 31. Her eyes were made to look beady, her chin was enlarged, and her mouth was drawn in a tight, unhappy line. No one likes it. (Well, Kate and Wills said they were thrilled with the painting, but they're obviously just being polite.)

Now, there's a new portrait. It wasn't commissioned by the Palace or anything, but painter Yves Messer was so appalled by the first attempt, he just had to do one himself. Messer's had his work shown all over the world -- certainly he could do the Duchess justice, right?

Messer's painting is better than the official portrait, but it's still pretty terrible. First of all, why did he choose to immortalize those bangs of hers, and second of all, why does she look like a chubby boy with a wig on?

The Duchess is graceful and beautiful and here she looks frumpy and disinterested. Her facial expression makes me think she's about to say, "Yeah, I mean, I've had a rough day. I could go for some tacos if you want. Whatever."

And I know the British aren't especially praised for their dental care, but why not paint Kate with a smile on her face? She has a great smile! It's warm, inviting, and full of life.

I'm just starting to feel a little bad for KMids. Why can't anyone paint a flattering portrait? Is it that hard?

It must be. Because this second attempt, although better than the first, is still god-awful. Poor thing.

What do you think of this new portrait?

It's worse than the official one! Horrible! She's such a beautiful woman who never takes a bad photo, but artists sure can't paint her. Her hair looks dull and graying in the new portrait, and she has a very disinterested look on her face and isn't smiling (she's almost always smiling, but they paint her without her gorgeous smile), and an ugly white top on that reminds me of a priest. Forget the paintings and just stick to photos.

I have a friend who uses regular No. 2 pencils and creates dead-accurate photorealistic drawings of people from photos or in person. I know there are other people who do this in various media. Why not hire one of them?

Anita Dalton

I like this one better. not the best but it is better

Nicole Norris

to be honest I like the first one better this one makes her look too young...

Seriously, is there not a better artist out there that would volunteer a portrait of her?  This dude should have just stopped.  Remember that saying, "When there's nothing good to say, just don't say anything at all."  Since artists say what they want through their art, obviously this artist doesn't have anything meaningful to say.

have to say, I think the first is MUCH better, also please for sanity's sake please stop with the KMids and Kstews and what not, its driving me mad

Although it looks like they are done on different canvases, all I can say is that the second portrait at least has her eyebrows correct. The first one doesn't make her eyes look at opened as they are in the second.

The only thing wrong with the first one is the bags painted under her eyes, take those out and it's pretty spot on. However, if you want to be really picky, the picture the first artist painted from, had those bags under her eyes, and the hyper realism is what he's known for. The second one doesn't look anything like Kate, and the hippy sh!t clothes and over all look expresses nothing of Kates personal style or personality..

um, where are they? I don't see anything.
