Portraits of Soldiers Before, During & After Deployment Will Leave You Breathless (PHOTOS)

soldierWhat does a soldier look like before, during, and after war? Photographer Lalage Snow's series We Are the Not Dead has answered that question with high-resolution clarity. Using British soldiers, Snow captured their faces before deployment to Afghanistan, during their tour, and once they'd returned home. Her images are as striking as they are revealing. The soldiers' physical transformation over the short year is palpable, if not their emotional one, as well.

Wow. In some cases, you could mistake them from three different men.

Every single set I see; 1.calm & peace 2. Stress 3. Peace but distance.

Wow. I was surprised. They look their oldest inthe 'during' picture. Some of the age and hardness comes off once they are home. In some ways that is encouraging.

They all look the same to me. They look like they lost weight and need some sleep.

They all look pretty much the same to me, other than looking tough and growing facial hair during deployment.  I didn't see any big difference.  They look a year older, a little thinner maybe.

Bush and Obama should fry for this "war."

my husband I think had a DRAMATIC change!!! He had a baby face before his deployment (18yrs old) he deployed at 19 and when he came back at 20 he looked like he was in his 30s. He lost his hair do to an IED he got hit by and so he is bald not by choice. It makes me sad because each deployment he has aged!! He deployed again at 21 and then at 24. The stressed look from his face kills me every time.

Stress is a known factor to induce an aged appearance. I am extremely supportive & grateful for their service. They each deserve a week at the spa when they get back....courtesy of thestir.com.... for sharing their "before, during, & after" story. B-)
