A tragedy is unfolding in New Jersey as reportedly a man is holding at least two children hostage. The tense hostage situation has been going on since last night when a man killed his 42-year-old girlfriend, Carmen Kelly, and one of her children. Carmen Kelly is the mother of five, and there are believed to be at least two children still being held hostage in the house, though possibly there could be more.
It started on Friday night when police entered the house in Trenton, New Jersey to find the decomposing body of a woman and a man brandishing a gun. Police reportedly withdrew and began negotiations with the man since he began threatening to harm the children.
Her oldest son, a 19-year-old autistic boy, is safe with relatives. Carmen also has two daughters, ages 17 and 14, and a son in his early teens and a 4-year-old boy. It's unclear which child was killed.
Police have surrounded the home and are desperately trying to convince the suspect, whose name hasn't been released, to surrender the remaining children in the house. I can't imagine what they are going through. They've just seen their mother and sibling killed and now a man that they probably know well is threatening to kill them. Original reports said that the man was the father of the children, but that appears to be false. In fact, Carmen's cousin said that she just met the man three months ago.
There are now at least four children motherless who have witnessed unbearable tragedy. And one child dead. We don't know enough facts yet to know what happened here, but it will be interesting to hear if the suspect has a criminal record. I'm not going to victim blame here, but yet, I wish that every mother was careful who she let around her children too. But some people come across as very charming at first and quickly degenerate. It's possible he lost it when she broke up with him. It's easy for us to judge not knowing the pair in question, and how the man presented himself.
Let's hope that the police are able to get the remaining children out safely.
Do you find yourself judging the mom when something like this happens?
