Child Molester Killed by Friend Who Finds Him on Offender Registry

Charles GaskinsRemember the quote from Shrek about ogres and onions? Both have layers that make them complex. And so it is with Charles Francis Gaskins, the white supremacist sentenced this week to life in prison for murdering a child molester.

On the outside layer -- the most superficial there is -- the story sounds almost like a celebration. Neil Hayes was a bad, bad man, and we have one less child molester on the streets! It's tempting to say that this man did a public service!

But did he? Did he really? Let's move on to the second layer.

Because Charles Gaskins wasn't a member of law enforcement who killed child molester Neil Hayes during the commission of a crime. Charles Gaskins was an ex-con, a member of the Peckerwoods, a white supremacist group that charges its members with vigilantism. They're to rid the world of child molesters who would sully the Caucasian race, and Gaskins followed his duty, bashing Hayes' head in with a rock, then disposing of his body with the help of his wife.

He had to hide it because what he did was wrong, no matter how good it felt.

And how did he have access to this child molester? That's another layer in this sordid tale.

Turns out Hayes was Gaskins' friend, or he was when the two were in prison, before Gaskins joined the Peckerwoods, before Hayes was released and turned to his old pal for a place to stay, before Gaskins found Hayes' name on the sex offender registry.

We're not just talking about a murder here, but a murder of someone Gaskins supposedly cared about. If he could do that, what else could he do? Who else would he hurt, with as little care as he showed for his supposed friend?

At the core of this onion is an uncomfortable but rather simple fact: Charles Gaskins will spend life in prison because he did something grievously wrong, and because he represents a danger to society.

It's an unpleasant thing to make sense of: child molesters are not people to be celebrated, but that doesn't make their murders moments to celebrate either. We can't parse out who "deserves" to be murdered.

Agree? Do you think this monster should be headed to prison, or do you feel sympathy for him because of who he killed?

This is difficult...the murderer isn't a good guy...but if I had to choose, it wouldn't be the pedophile...but I hate white supremest almost as much (I'm apparently "a traitor to my Caucasian race") and they don't like my "kind"), and I believe he's where he belongs, however the reason for his journey back to prison SHOULD be celebrated...I don't believe child molesters can be rehabilitated, so one less to share this earth with is NOT a bad thing...

He did the right thing, child molesters dont belong on the streets once an offender always an offender

I believe more people should kill child molesters. They are a blight on out society, and their actions cause wide and varied issues, sometimes causing their victims to become offenders or criminals themselves.I believe in carving out he cancer that has sullied our world, and killing monsters is a good first step. Now, as far as the killer being a white supremacist himself, well, that's another disease plaguing this world, and now he's going to be in jail the rest of his life, so I'm ok with that.

Anyone engaging in vigilantism against registered sex offenders needs to do their research VERY carefully. Some of those guys were 19 having sex with their 16-year-old girlfriend. Not great behavior, but much different from an actual child rapist.

Yea the dude is not on the top of the good list but ,really? law enforcement should have turned their heads. it is terrible to hate someone who can't help their skin color, but it is way worse to hurt an innocent child who can't defend it's self. I say give him a public service award and enough said

Obviously I don't like  the group he's affiliated with ,but other than that,I see him like Dexter:"Taking out the trash".

I agree with Kaerae!! There is a huge difference!!!!

It's the job of law enforcement and the justice system to 'take care of' sex offenders. As much as we'd like to defend it, vigilantism is never right.

That said, they have truly fallen down on the job with this knee-jerk Sex Offender Registry. There are people on there for life that did nothing more (as Kaerae pointed out) than love their girlfriend. Or get caught peeing out behind the garage when they were a little drunk, and someone busted them for "indecent exposure". We need a complete overhaul of our justice system (and a lot of other things...), so the truly evil are dealt with properly - and THEN, if that means executing them, so be it.
