A suburban Detroit man was living with a dead woman on his couch for over five months before anyone noticed. Dennis McCauley, 64, was arraigned Friday on charges he mutilated a corpse, stole an identity, and committed larceny. It was when authorities came to his trailer to deliver an eviction notice that they saw the body of 72-year-old Ann Marquis. Police believe she and Dennis had been living together for three years, and that she ultimately died of natural causes.
One question, however, remains unanswered.
Does Dennis not have a nose? How is it possible he shared a trailer with a dead body for close to half a year without going insane from a) the smell, b) the overwhelming macabre scene, or c) both A and B.
Evidently, Dennis put up with the presumed horrifying scent and terrifying visual in order to collect Ann's Social Security checks, which were being sent to their shared home. He's currently behind bars and his bail is set at $250,000.
I have to admire Dennis's dedication to fraud and money here -- not just anyone could live with a dead person for that long and not totally freak out. That takes perseverance and what I assume would be thousands of air fresheners.
But, Dennis isn't alone. Last summer, it was discovered that a woman lived with her boyfriend's dead body for two years because she was lonely. Hmm. Makes Dennis's case seem almost banal, now doesn't it.
What do you think?
