Chilling Photo May Show Bombing Suspect Walking by 8-Year-Old Victim -- With a Smile on His Face

Horrifying 37

bomb suspect crowdIn the first few days after the horrific Boston Marathon bombing, I didn't think too much about who might have been responsible. My thoughts were with the victims, and it's not like whoever did it would have some justifiable, defensible reason for their crime anyway. Terrorists never do. But when I saw this photo obtained by the FBI of what appears to be 19-year-old Dzhokhar Tsarnaev (otherwise known as Suspect #2) smiling and standing just a few feet away from 8-year-old Martin Richard, who would be killed moments later, and his 7-year-old sister Jane, who would lose a leg in the explosion, I realized something: At no point did I consider, even for a second, that a mother could have been behind this twisted plot.

Only someone consumed with hatred and ignorance -- someone incomprehensibly self-absorbed and completely devoid of compassion -- could walk past the children he was about to kill and laugh. No woman with children of her own could ever do the same.

More from The StirTimeline of All the Boston Bombing Craziness That Happened While You Were Sleeping

As a mom, it's almost impossible to look at this picture of little Martin, standing with his feet on the bottom of the metal barricade to get a better view (something we've all seen our own kids do), without breaking down. He had his whole life ahead of him ... he was there to hug his father, of all things, for god's sake. Then, to see that smiling face under the white baseball cap carrying his nefarious backpack in the immediate background ... I don't know about you, but my first reaction was rage. Absolute rage.

My rage didn't last long, though -- it faded fast, dissolving into sorrow. Because in the end, Tsarnaev isn't worth my anger, but Martin is worth mourning.

How do you feel when you look at this picture?

This is the biggest piece of crap ever. You're a moron I'm insulted for men everywhere.

These terrorists were RAISED by moms too you know.

The boy looks too far to the left for him to see, I think. Either way, it's an outright attack on Americans. I hope they catch him alive, and get every ounce of intel on him. By any means possible.

For one thing, there is NOTHING to feel. I don't presume to judge guilt or innocence without FACTS, not speculation.. not bigotry, not prejudice. The photo proves NOTHING. The guy is smiling at an event where there was cheering and the atmosphere festive. What a shock! If the guy were seen twirling a Snidely Whiplash-like mustache while hovering over eerily, then that may indicate something... but coincidental proxemics means NOTHING!

there's other people standing around martin who are smiling as well... they must have been in on it... *rolls eyes*

It's a pretty sure bet that bombers are male, and that terorists are male, so yes, it's doubtful a woman, let alone a mother, would bomb a crowd of people.  Still, it seems people who knew the young man would never have believed he would do this, either.

Personally, I would call the surveilancw videos and photos of the bomb and eyewitness testimony of the person carjacked evidence.  I think it is prety clear the two brothers identified as Suspect 1 and suspect 2 made and planted the bombs.

I just want to know WHY.  Not that it changes anything...the lives lost, innocense stolen, wounds sustained remain.

The situation was very sad, the fact that anyone would do this

why does my comment keep getting cut off? I was saying, its sad that anyone would do this. But lets not kid outselves and say a mother could never hurt a child. There have been many cases in the past regarding women killing children, to include their own.

Lexi I agree with you too, everyone was happy and most likely smiling.. You can't even tell if he is smiling in this picture. I believe his brother either forced him to help or brain washed him. I know even the biggest criminals have normal lives but his friends said he didn't seem like the type of person to do something like this

I also feel heartbreak when I see this photo but your article point is pretty dumb. Psychopaths and terrorists come in all forms, ale or female, religious or not....and the point about the smile makes no sense, as other posters have commented.
