Lawmaker Who Called Women 'Vaginas' Isn't Exactly Apologetic

Say What!? 12

new hampshire state capitolJust when we thought it might be safe to say Republicans learned in last year's election not to underestimate the power of 50 percent of their constituents, aka WOMEN, here comes New Hampshire state Rep. Peter Hansen, referring to women as "vaginas." Yes, like a petulant, pre-pubescent boy.

After a colleague gave a speech on a "stand your ground" gun bill, Hansen had the following to say via email ...

What could possibly be missing from those factual tales of successful retreat in VT, Germany, and the bowels of Amsterdam? Why children and vagina's [sic] of course. While the tales relate the actions of a solitary male the outcome cannot relate to similar situations where children and women and mothers are the potential victims.

Um, WHAT?! Yeah, it's offensive on so many levels. What is this -- 1952? Is government still just a boys' club where old white guys sit around smoking cigars and making decisions for the rest of us? I don't think soooo.

Thankfully, a handful of other Republicans have immediately realized that Hansen's language is hugely offensive to, well, just about half of the country. Not to mention other politicians who happen to HAVE vaginas ... but aren't okay with being referred to as female genitalia. For instance, state Republican chair Jennifer Horn remarked:

There is no excuse for anybody to use such disrespectful language—especially an elected official. I strongly condemn his disrespectful and shameful remarks.

Good job. But Hansen himself doesn't seem prepared to step up to the plate and acknowledge that he screwed up royally. He first responded by saying, "If you find the noun vagina insulting or in some way offensive then perhaps a better exercise might be for you to re-examine your psyche." OMG. Has there ever been a more appropriate time to facepalm?! Then, he only slightly backtracked by saying in a statement:

Can there be any doubt my comment is being misinterpreted and taken completely out of context? ... I apologize to those who took offense.

What. A. @#$!-er. Here's hoping women voters remember this when they take to the polls and consider whether to re-elect a man who, in the 21st century America, clearly only sees women for what's between our legs.

Can you believe this?!

Yes, this is offensive, but if women find it so, perhaps there shouldn't be dozens of liberal women crashing legislation sessions, protests, marches, etc wearing giant viginas! it's hard to take liberals offense seriously (as a conservative woman who would give a serious stink eye to anyone who refered to me as such) when they are only offended when conservatives do it, but think it's cool when liberals do.

Todd Vrancic

Perhaps we should start referring to him as a body part only males have.

I would love to see what context he thinks would make these words appropriate. @Jespren, I find those protesters to be juvenile myself. I don't think that those types of stunts help legitimize ones argument and a few dozen women do not speak for us all. But this man is a state representative. Shouldn't he rise above such childishness and not stoop to that level?

I believe liberal women started it with their Vigina Dialogues.    People who suggested that was offensive were sneare at as  uptight and uncool.      It is offensive but it's an example of reaping what we sow.

I agree with you Jespren! And Todd... people already do... if I had quarter for everytime I heard someone call a politican a "dick" I'd be a rich woman.

Of course it was inappropriate for the lawmaker to say that. But maybe if women want to be treatred as actual people and as citizens capable of making informed decisions, then they should stop voting with their vagina instead of their brain and stop parading around protests dressed as vaginas! Can't have it both ways, ladies.

Again another hypocritical blog by Maressa. What he said was stupid, but women cannot ask to be treated like women, then act like the only thing that matters to them in politics is their vagina.

What he said was incredibly stupid! Women should be treated like women and not just a vagina. I bet every woman in his life is so very proud of him!!

I find it interesting that his term he used to demean women is ultimately the only part of them he wants...
