The man who kidnapped a 10-year-old girl last week is still at large. But Tobias Dustin Summers has been charged with 36 counts of sexual assault, kidnapping, and first degree burglary. We knew the girl had been sexually assaulted, but it must have been especially awful to add up to 36 counts (he had her for 10 hours!). Police are calling it an "unspeakably traumatic attack." And she was only ten years old.
The LA Weekly has details on what Summers allegedly did to this innocent child, but you may not want to read them. They are horrific -- you wouldn't want any of this to happen to a person of any age. But it's especially wrenching to know that all of this happened to a little girl.
She's lucky to still be alive, after what happened to her. It will take a long time for her to heal -- physically, emotionally, and psychologically. My heart breaks for her and her family. And now that we know what Summers is charged with, I hope even more that they catch him.
I wonder if by now just about everyone in the country has seen Summers' photo enough times to spot him on sight. Just this week, police released security video of a man who mugged a woman at a subway station. He was caught and turned in very soon after. Releasing a suspect's photo really can work. I think it's just a matter of time before Summers is caught.
If convicted, Summers could get three consecutive life sentences. And even that would not be enough.
Do you think Summers will be caught soon?
