Adoption offers from around the world are flooding in for one 4-year-old boy in New Jersey. After you hear his heartbreaking story, you'll probably want to adopt him too.
According to the Associated Press, the officer who broke down the door of an apartment and found him there alone with his dead mother's body yesterday described it as a "scene from a World War II concentration camp." The boy, who had been there alone for an unknown period of time, had been living off of a bag of sugar, and was too weak to open the refrigerator to get any other food. He weighed just 26 pounds.
Thankfully, some workers had smelled something foul coming from the apartment and called police. God knows what would have happened had they not.
It's not know yet what the cause of death was for his mother, Kiana Workman, and the boy wasn't able to say how long she had been dead. Police estimate it to be between two and five days. Friends and family hadn't heard from her for a week. That doesn't seem like enough time to be solely responsible for the child's emaciated state, and police say it's possible he was "improperly cared for before." That would make the case all the more heartbreaking ... if that's even possible.
Police say the boy is bright and talkative and misses his mommy. Perhaps the most heartbreaking detail police released is that he rubbed lotion on her body to try to help her.
I have a 4-year-old, and the thought of her alone for days in an apartment, scared, hungry, and confused is more than I can take. This poor, poor baby.
For now he's in the hospital being treated for malnourishment and dehydration. He'll remain in state custody until it can be determined if there are other relatives who could possibly take him in. If not, it seems there are plenty of other people who would. Nothing can make up for what he went through, but hopefully he can find a loving home with people who will do everything in their power to try and do so.
