Father Kills Toddler Then Shoots Estranged Wife in the Arms, Legs & Face

gunsIt's one of those stories that gets worse as more details are revealed. Fifty-two-year-old Kenneth Ayers is suspected of shooting and killing his 2-year-old son in central Pennsylvania Saturday morning. He was allegedly picking up his son from his mother's home when he got into an altercation with his estranged wife, Hollie Jo, who was also present. Angered, he shot her in the arms and legs, then turned the gun on the boy and shot their toddler.

As he took his son's dead body out to his truck, the injured Hollie Jo tried to go after him, so he shot her in the face. He also shot at his mother, but thankfully, he missed. A few hours later, Ayers was found dead of an self-inflicted gunshot wound after this alleged murder/suicide.

Evidently, this was all over a heated custody battle between Kenneth and Hollie Jo. She had filed a "protection from abuse order" against him, but it allowed for him to see their son.

After the gruesome incident, Hollie Jo was transported to a local hospital and police say she is expected to survive, despite bullet wounds in her arms, legs, and face. Her son, however, was dead on the scene.

I can't help but think of Hollie Jo at this moment. She was coherent enough after being shot the first go round to try and get her son back from her mad husband, so she was aware at that time that he was dead ... but does she know that now? Is she incapacitated? Will she have to relive the tragedy all over again when she awakes from surgery and they inform her why she's in the hospital?

Like any mother, I'm sure she wished it was her life that was taken and not her 2-year-old's. Her grief is likely unimaginable, but so is the crime. A father shooting his toddler point blank? It just doesn't make any sense. It's simply ... senseless.

What can you make of this?

He shouldn't have had access to his kid if he was too dangerous to be near his wife.

What a sick demented piece of shit. I hope he burns in hell.

Well thank the effing judicial system for this one. He is violent but let the guy see his child. I think any abuse situations to mom should automatically take away sole custody to father. Supervised visits only until kid is an adult. Same goes for bat shit crazy women who abuse men. This is sick. Hope the lawyers and judge are sleeping soundly knowing they allowed this.

I'm so scared of this. I'm about to go through a similar situation regarding restraining order and he still gets access to the kids. I'm worried he won't bring them back.

That's why men shouldn't be allowed anywhere near children! Fathers have no biological attachment to children like we do, they don't grow in their bodies. And that's why it's so easy for men to hurt and kill children. You never hear of mothers hurting their kids! Never happens!

This is horrible! The same type of thing happened down the road from me a few months back. But instead of shooting the 2 yr old son the dad ran him over with his car- left the car on top of his son. I agree if the "parent" is violent don't let them have/ take/ see the child. RIP little guy!

This is so sad, he was obviously a sick individual and coward. @Lydia: What you said doesn't make much sense, if you listen to the news/media at all you will be aware that there are sick women/mothers (Casey Anthony?) that do indeed hurt their children too and not all men/fathers are monsters. Saying they have no biological attachment makes no sense, the child has half their genes. Some people just shouldn't have kids male or female. There are plenty of upstanding men/fathers that would NEVER hurt their childern or any child. My own dad is an example of that, fatherhood is very special to him and he has nothing but love and respect for all of us kids.

Lydia??? You must be joking, a lot of children (abused) die at the hands of a mother or covers up the death due to a boyfriend/husband/sig other, killing a child. I am sorry you never had a loving father and don't know or understand what it's like to have that man in your life. My husband would go nuts if something happened to our kids.
