It's been awhile since we've seen anything from Yoselyn Ortega, the nanny who is accused of killing two children, Lucia and Leo Krim, who were under her care. But she briefly appeared in court today for a hearing about her psychological evaluation. The accused nanny kept her head down and apparently glanced nervously at photographers. She was wearing a gray jumpsuit, glasses, had her hair in braided pigtails, and looked much older and more haggard than the photos we've become accustomed to seeing of her. She also had a large scar on her neck, from where she tried to kill herself with a knife. The Krim parents didn't attend the hearing.

The judge was unhappy with how long Ortega's psychological evaluation was taking, but her lawyer explained that her team has to read through 6,000 pages of medical records, starting from even before she allegedly killed the children. Ortega has been living in Elmhurst Hospital in a psychiatric facility.

Ortega was in the hospital for weeks after she tried to kill herself, and surely being in a psych ward is no fun, but Ortega looks like she's aged a decade since the killings. I hope this means they are weighing heavily on her mind. No "reason" has come out about why Ortega may have killed two innocent children except that possibly she wasn't getting along with the Krim family, and that she was suffering stress over financial issues. It's still a huge leap from that to stabbing two young trusting souls to death.

She had nothing to gain from these murders -- and everything to lose. It does seem like her mind just snapped. Still ... it's hard to fathom. How does someone go from being seemingly a competent caretaker one minute to a knife-wielding child killer the next? It boggles the mind.

It will be interesting to see what comes out at trial. Meanwhile, Ortega's appearance seems to indicate a lot is on her conscience.
