Missing California Couple in Peru Supposedly 'Found' But Their Family Senses Someone Is Lying (VIDEO)

Say What!? 12

missing California coupleWhen Jamie Neal and Garrett Hand went off to do a months long bike trip through South America, they never could have guessed that their adventure would put them in the middle of an international missing persons scandal. But that is exactly what happened. The couple, last seen in Lima, Peru on January 25, had been documenting their trip through a blog and Facebook and then went radio silent more than a month ago.

Now the Peruvian tourist minister has told the families not to worry. He says the couple is on a boat in a remote, "paradise-like" part of the country and can't be in touch, but that they have "fallen in love with the country." He claims they are having SO much fun that they have forgotten to contact family (or to use their bank accounts).

Hand's mother isn't buying it. And who can blame her? See below:

The Cusco region in Peru is a highly tourist-filled area, with thousands of people trekking each year out to see Machu Picchu and the stunning ruins. But it's also sometimes, like anywhere else, a dangerous area where just recently there were kidnapping threats made against American tourists.

Hand's mother is right to be concerned. Something isn't sitting right here. The tourist minister seems a little too eager to highlight the lush beauty of Peru and doesn't find it odd at all that a couple who had previously been in non-stop touch suddenly fell off the map.

If this is the truth, then they have a whole lot of explaining to do. Why would they drop off the planet like that? What a cruel thing to do to their family. Their mothers should know them best and should know whether that is a likely scenario. So with his mother having doubts, it makes me doubt, too.

One month without contact is a long, long time. Especially if it wasn't planned. My parents recently spent a month in that region, and it was always very clear when they were going off the grid and when they would come back.

Something isn't right here. For the families, of course, I hope it's simple. I hope they are safe and that they merely lost contact. Of course, if that is the case, they have a lot of explaining to do. If not and if the Peruvian government is hiding something, they should be ashamed. They have just lost precious time in finding this couple by trying to earn some tourist revenue.

Do you think the couple is really found?

It doesn't sound right. To me it sounds like a quick poor attempt to cover up something. A month of silence after keeping in that close of contact? Just doesn't make sense, especially without them saying something first.

My husband's family is Peruvian so naturally we've visited Peru together. Lima is filled with tourists. I have walked through it and I never felt unsafe. One thing though, is that it's pretty hard to access internet. There are small shops that have ready to use computers, but there's not usually an option for wi-fi. Maybe they really did just take a break from the internet world.

So because of this "missing couple" the US Embassy categorized Cuzco as unsafe and all they had to do was call home. Not great visitors :( and yes they were found and have already talked to their family. The minister was not lying! Unlike some politicians this side of the world.

Sadly I believe they are not safe on a boat trip. Just a hunch from reading and following this story. I think they may have been a kidnapped with a sexual motivation. I fear he may have been killed and she was raped and either held against her will or killed. The Peruvian government will probably drag on their lies as long as they can, covering up how screwed up it is over there. Evil people. Scary place to travel. Frightening lesson these poor kids learned.

Gia a simple google search turned up multiple news stories stating that the families have spoken with this couple and they are safe. What on earth are you basing your theory on?!?! What a terrible thing to say when you have NO proof that you stated to support yourself!!

Gia, your statement is full of ignorane, to say the least!! Peruvian government should find out who you are and sue you!!
On the other hand, have you ever been in Peru? It is not a scary place to travel, sure you have to take some measures, as at different places, but it is not what you think! If you don't know Peru, you can judge it!
Finally, you can see what Jamie Neal posted at At https://www.facebook.com/jamie.neal.184 “Im sorry if you have been worried...weve been traveling though the amazon and the villages do not have electricity let alone internet or phones. We are now stuck on a military base in Pantoja Peru...and everyone is interviewing us and taking photos...saying that we are now famous in Peru. We are still unable to make phone calls beacuse the internet is too slow to use skype. We are now waiting for our Friend from finland who is on the other slow boat we were taken from by the military with all of our bags and bikes...hope they make it here. This is fucking insane...”
