Tiffany Engagement Rings Sold at Costco Are Probably Fake & We're Shocked

Love & Learn 16

A Tiffany & Co. subsidiary is suing the wholesale retailer Costco for selling fake "Tiffany's" rings. Tiffany says that perhaps thousands of people bought engagement rings at Costco that they really, truly thought were Tiffany engagement rings (??!!). Naturally, the rings were not Tiffany rings but, er, Costco rings. Who fell for this nonsense??!!

The investigation started after an alert customer told Tiffany that a Costco in Huntington Beach, California was selling what it terms "Tiffany" rings to customers -- who thought they were getting a great deal on the notoriously pricey upscale rings. Says Tiffany's lawyer:

We now know that there are at least hundreds if not thousands of Costco members who think they bought a Tiffany engagement ring at Costco, which they didn't.

You have to wonder why anyone would believe that a Tiffany ring at Costco is a real Tiffany ring. Maybe it referred to a Tiffany setting -- but even that isn't a genuine Tiffany setting. At least Tiffany would like you to think it's not, even if it looks the same. But this sounds like they're talking about the entire ring -- diamond and all.

I'll be the first one to say no one has to feel obliged to buy a Tiffany engagement ring. But I'll also be the first to admit I wouldn't want to be given a ring from a big wholesaler. I've already given my reasons, so I'm not going to go into that again.

But people who buy a "Tiffany" ring at Costco are just fooling themselves. Yeah, like I was when I bought that blue "Opal" ring for $100 in Mexico. Turned out it was blue "Opal plastic." Not even glass, people. Plastic!

Buyer be warned, if it sounds too good to be true, it is. And, fellas, if you're trying to get away with giving your gal a Tiffany ring at a vastly reduced price, that's just lame. Just tell her it's from Costco. Apparently a lot of women don't care about that stuff.

Would you buy a Tiffany ring from Costco?

I think what people are meaning to say is that the diamonds at Costco are so great that they have the same requirements as Tiffany's does for their diamonds. I have heard this before. Like they all have to be High in clarity and color. People are stupid if they think they are getting a Tiffany ring at Costco. If it isn't engraved with "Tiffany & Co." On the inside then it's not real. Just admit it, you got your ring at Costco and own it! I would!

Whoever was dumb enough to think they were buying genuine TIffany rings at Costco deserved to get duped.

Yeah I am kind of wondering about the details.... did the rings come in blue boxes that say Tiffany's? How could one mistake Costco for Tiffany's?

I got a HUGE aquamarine pendant from seller at a trade show for $60 made in Mexico. Asked over and over if it was a real aquamarine and he said yes. Aquamarine color maybe! It was glass. Very well cut glass, but not real stone. Paid $60 for fancy sterling silver setting. Oh well. Still love it, but don't like being duped.

Would I buy a Tiffany diamond ring from Costco?  No...obvious that wouldn't happen.  Would I buy a diamond ring at Costco... no. Not even then.  Diamonds are a sham anyway...over priced hunks of supposedly "rare" rocks... so rare that one can buy them at Costco or any jewelry store in any town all over the world.

Give me colored gemstones every time.  Diamonds are fine for a bit of sparkle in the setting, but other than that...I think they're borinig.

different costcos caters to their areas. I live in an upper middle class of san diego and my costco had a gucci trunk show. If my costco had tiffany rings i would also fall for it, but only if it was in a tiffanys box.

I agree with handy... diamonds are over rated. My wedding ring I picked up while we where dating at a flea market for $2.50... I cherish is dearly it is made of silver and mosenite(dunno how its spelt) the ring is very old but very sentimental... my husband has asked many times if I would want a real diamond ring... over the years I always said no... and recently for our 8th wedding anniversary he bought me a really nice small white gold ring with 2 tiny diamonds.. I love it very much but even after seeing the receipt from zales the real diamonds look no better then fake ones.

It's not against the law to buy something then sell it again
