Before today, many people probably never heard of Reeva Steenkamp, the gorgeous model girlfriend of Olympic double-amputee runner, Oscar Pistorious. Unfortunately, as she was shot four times and killed early on Valentine's Day -- allegedly by Pistorious himself -- the 29-year-old beauty is, sadly, all over the news today. But who was she exactly? Here are five things you should know about Reeva Steenkamp.
She was one of FHM magazine's 100 Sexiest Women in the World two years in a row. When you see any photo of Reeva, it's clear why she was a model -- she was an unbelievably beautiful woman. In addition to appearing in the men's magazine, FHM, Reeva was the South African face of Avon cosmetics, appeared in many international and South African advertisements, and was a celebrity contestant on a reality show called Tropika Island of Treasure filmed in Jamaica.
She was much more than a pretty face. Reeva wasn't one to simply coast off her good looks. She was a law school graduate, as well as an "entrepreneur committed to empowering women." In fact, she was set to give an inspirational talk on Thursday at a Johannesburg school. The talk, according to publicist Sarit Tomlinson, was about "empowerment and inspiration and what inspires you and how to follow your dreams."
She was a kind soul. Pretty much anyone who talks about Reeva says the same thing: She was one of the kindest people they knew. She's been described as funny, intelligent, and inspiring. Tomlinson said of her: "She was the sweetest, kindest, just angelic soul. Also, a very inspiring individual, very passionate about speaking about women and empowerment."
She was a homebody. Steenkamp described herself as someone as a person with a "passion for cars and cooking and prefers to read a book on her off days and spend quality time with friends and family."
She was an active Twitter user. Reeva was always sending messages to her nearly 12,000 Twitter users. One of her more recent tweets read: "What do you have up your sleeve for your love tomorrow???" Sad.
