Following President Obama's State of the Union address last night, Senator Marco Rubio (R-Fla.), the man being called the "rising star" of the Republican party (isn't that what they always say, though?) gave the GOP response. But when he was done, no one was really talking about what he said, which tended toward the same ol', same ol' "taxes and big government bad, smaller government, less regulation good!" It was what he did.
Mid-speech, Rubio bent down and, in a klutzy move, grabbed a tiny Poland Spring water bottle, then took a awkward, panicked swig of water while keeping his eyes on the camera. Then he tried to abruptly get back to business. And okay, sure, it may not sound like it was hilarious -- but OMG, it was! Really, it was like a so-bad-it's-funny Saturday Night Live sketch. And so obviously, it became the Meme of the Night.
Check it out ...
Hee hee. It's no wonder that as soon as this happened, little Poland Spring bottles popped up all over Facebook and everyone joked about it on Twitter.
On one hand, it's kind of depressing that this is what we're talking about today, when there were so many legitimate, serious issues addressed by President Obama and Senator Rubio last night. But ... on the other, it makes sense that we're giggling about it, because it was a very human moment. And any time politicians, who are supposed to be so polished and "in charge" of the moment, break that mold, it's normal to be amused.
It's also pretty great that Rubio can laugh about it himself. Not only did Rubio post a link to his personal Twitter account that takes readers to a photo of a bottle of Poland Spring bottled water, but he seemed to have a good sense of humor about it on Good Morning America this morning when he defended himself:
I needed water, what am I going to do? God has a funny way of reminding us we’re human. ... My mouth got dry, and I had to get some water. You know, when you give a speech on a podium and the water is right there — but when you don’t, you start looking around thinking, ‘Where am I going to get the water?’
Haaa! Wow. Guess it's a good question! And it sounds like he was a bit nervous, too. But then again, who wouldn't be when addressing the nation? And, you know, attempting to counter the President of the United States himself!
Here's Rubio's GMA interview:
What did you think about Rubio's swig -- a lot of brouhaha about nothing or seriously funny?
