Boy Scouts Could Allow Gay Leaders

Breaking 24

Boy Scouts of AmericaThe Boy Scouts of America could end its no-gays policy as soon as next week.

In a statement released yesterday, the BSA announced it's reviewing its policy and deciding whether to let individual organizations decide whether to accept gays as Scout unit leaders.

What do you think of this news? Does it affect how you view the Boy Scouts?

From the BSA statement:

Currently, the BSA is discussing potentially removing the national membership restriction regarding sexual orientation. This would mean there would no longer be any national policy regarding sexual orientation, and the chartered organizations that oversee and deliver Scouting would accept membership and select leaders consistent with each organization’s mission, principles, or religious beliefs. BSA members and parents would be able to choose a local unit that best meets the needs of their families.

This seems like a smart move to me -- since a sizable number of Boy Scout units are run by churches and religious organizations, the new policy would allow individual organizations to decide whether they want to place restrictions on leadership. The BSA would have no say one way or the other. Bam. Everybody's happy.

Er ... not quite.

Southern Baptist leaders are angry about the proposed changes and say that if the new policy is approved, they might ask their churches to support other boys' groups. This is no empty threat, since Southern Baptist churches are one of the biggest sponsors of the BSA.

Meanwhile, gay rights leaders are understandably happy about the news. "The pulse of equality is strong in America," Chad Griffin of the Human Rights Campaign said via the Associated Press, "and today it beats a bit faster with news that the Boy Scouts may finally put an end to its long history of discrimination."

To me, the BSA's proposed changes sound entirely reasonable, whether you're gay, straight, Christian, atheist, or anything else. Back off, BSA, and let each Boy Scout group decide for itself what it wants its membership to look like. If this policy is approved, Southern Baptists could keep their Boy Scout units the way they are, while other units could open membership to gay fathers, for example, and gay boys. In my opinion, no man or boy should ever be excluded from learning to tie knots and survive in the wilderness. If the conservatives are right, this stuff might come in handy down the road, you know?

What do you think about the BSA's proposed changes?

It is a move in the right direction, but it is not enough. What would you think if the BSA allowed each troop to decide whether or not to include blacks? What if they made that decision at a time when many churches in a large part of the country promoted racial discrimination? Would that sound entirely reasonable to you?

I am excited about this, but not happy... not yet. I am looking forward to throwing my support behind the BSA on the day they finally accept everyone, regardless of sexual identity.

FelipesMom proves in her statement above why the BSA cannot make this change and retain its membership. Because of the virulent nature of advocates like FelipesMom, I fear I will have no choice but to end my family's association with the BSA should the proposed change come to fruition. What a disaster for this nation's boys.

I don't see why they shouldn't. You can't catch "the gay". -_-

Just sad, another wonderful organization bullied into corruption.

Ahhhhhhhhhhhhh. Floridamom. What a disaster for our nation's boys. That they may be exposed to other people who are different from them.

Go back to the 50s, they'll love you.

Florida I too had to end my family's association with BSA because of the virulent nature of activists. Only, in my eyes, the activists in question are people like you. Anti-gay activists are on the wrong side of history. Way to go BSA! A step in the right direction

How will these children know that their leader is gay unless they are told? With that question, why would an adult tell a child of their sexual orientation? When I was a teacher, I never discussed my sexual orientation with any of my students.

And what exactly do parents fear is going to happen if they let "the gays" into the BSA? Are their kids going to "catch the gay"? Are there going to be gay Roman orgies at the Jamboree? Are the gay troop leaders going to molest their kids? Because, you know there is no difference between a pedophile and a gay man, according to the American Family Associateion, who tweeted this morning " Jerry Sandusky is now the poster boy for the Boy Scouts of America." Are the gay boys in the troop going to sexually harass your straight kid? Good grief.

I might actually let my boys join the BSA if they end their policies of bigotry.. But Felipesmom has a point--it should go further. I live in TX and I fear that all the local BSA units won't allow it...might have to start my own..

Im torn, Im with Felipesmom that they are not doing enough, but also agree they should just leave any sexuality out of it.  Look at the girl scouts, you never hear of any of them out hiking or camping and getting lost in the woods, or electrocuting their tent.  Maybe the boy scouts should focus a little more on that.
