School Cops Buy Semi-Automatic Rifles to Protect Our Kids -- Hallelujah!

This Just In 29

semi automatic rifleWith all of the debate recently on how to prevent school shootings, one of the ideas being tossed around is to put armed guards on school campuses. The NRA even put out an ad attacking President Obama for endorsing gun control laws while his daughters enjoy the protection of armed guards at their private school in Washington, D.C.

This may seem like a novel concept to some, but the fact of the matter is that armed guards have been patrolling public school campuses for years. Sometimes parents might not even know if the teacher is packing heat ... like in Utah, where teachers may conceal-carry their weapons without ever informing parents that there’s a loaded gun in the classroom.

Not every state or district allows teachers to slip a gun into their holsters on the job, but plenty employ armed guards on campuses for security purposes. Even California -- liberal bastion that it is!

Fontana Unified School District in Los Angeles has long employed police officers to patrol its 44 schools -- and they carry guns. Recently, the 14 officers that patrol the schools upgraded their weapons to Colt LE6940 semiautomatic rifles. The $14,000 move comes a few years after the schools nixed their guidance programs. One student told the press, "They should use the money to get back our counselors because a lot of us really need them."

Easier said than done, kiddo. The fact is that that $14,000 is going to go a LOT further in protecting kids on campus that it ever would for a guidance counselor. Like it or not, California is a bankrupt state, and things need to be paid for. Unless there are guidance counselors that want to come in and work for free, school districts need to make decisions as to how to spend the limited amount of funds they have.

One of the reasons the Newtown shooting was so tragic was because it was so unexpected for the small, family-oriented town. Things in Los Angeles are a bit different though -- gangs run rampant, violence is prevalent, and armed guards on campuses are a fact of life.

In fact, many cities across the country employ armed guards (along with metal detectors and drug-sniffing dogs) to patrol the local schools. This is almost exclusively in minority neighborhoods, by the way. Where is the outrage over that? If it’s ‘dangerous’ for an official with a gun to be on campus with upper middle class white kids, why isn’t there a kerfuffle over the same thing in poor black and Latino areas?

All kids deserve protection. The easiest, fastest, most cost-effective way to do that right now is to adequately arm the people that protect them. The real outrage over the weapons situation in Fontana should be: Why aren’t more school districts doing the same?

Would you feel safer if your kids went to schools monitored by armed guards or policemen?

It's a false security. A clever kid will be able to neutralize or avoid the officer by end of their second semester by musk keeping their eyes open, watching responses and keeping their mouth shut.

A non-clever kid could still get off 30-100 rounds before police intervention.

having armed guards will do NOTHING! so stop putting money where it will go to waste. I went to a school with armed police man and they did nothing to prevent the violence that happened almost every month. I remember watching a teen pull out a machete from his pants and slashing another teens head open. Yup. Thats a minority public school for you. what makes you think its gonna work in a middle class/upper class public school? Also you NRA supporters brag about incident of mass gun violence to be so rare SO RARE that gun control will do little to help it so wouldnt it make sense that these RARE crimes are so RARE that we dont need armed officials in ALL schools??????????

I agree with SassB; I think armed guards make parents feel warm and fuzzy, but they don't really provide a lot of protection. My kids go to a school with armed guards (we're in Europe); they check IDs before we're allowed on the grounds, but I've never seen anyone searched or even asked what they're doing there. I guess it's better than nothing because if something did happen they're already on the scene and could (hopefully) take out the threat, but it would be delusional to believe that the school is completely safe simply because of their presence.

Counsellors that might actually be able to prevent violence or expensive guards that can't. Gee, let me think about that.

I keep mentioning about the minority neighborhoods And schools and I get called racist. I hate the race card being played, but I find it appalling that ONE school with a majority of white affluent families has a massacre, but everyday minority kids are being killed and no one bats an eye.

I feel like armed guards in schools will only ensure that the next school shooting will involve more than one shooter: one (or more) to take down the guard, and one to actually start the shooting inside.  I'm not one for more gun control, necessarily, but I don't think this will prevent large scale attacks.  It will only make the attacks bigger.  The heavy media coverage also isn't helping, because all the details being released is like a school shooting tutorial for disturbed kids. I don't have an answer, I guess.  I just don't see things getting better.

It DISGUSTS me that parents might not even know there could be a gun in their child's classroom.Utter;y, utterly appalloinig- parents have a right to know if there is a lethal weapon in the vicinity of their child.

Absolutely, after the twin towers armed guards were put on planes and low and behold no more major plane take overs, the only way to stop a gunman is with a gun! Good intentions and denial will not! Please arm the people that are in charge of keeping our children for entire days at a time, all of these liberal wingnuts will be thanking that armed person that will here

Yayyyyyy!!! I love the idea of semi automatic assault rifels in my child's school!!

It's just the best that they can kill mass amounts of people in a matter of seconds, not to mention never get stolen or accidently go off!

It just makes me feel warm and fuzzy inside, nothing could go wrong with that!!!

More guns means less violence right???
