Teen Who Reportedly Shot His Family May Have Texted a Photo of His Murdered Mother

New Mexico murderNo one knows why Nehemiah Griego, who is accused of the horrific slaying of his family, would have done such an awful thing. The 15-year-old is accused of gunning down his mother, brother, and two young sisters (5 and 2), and then waiting for his father to come home from a late night volunteering with homeless people and then gunning him down, too.

It's unthinkable. As a parent, no one ever wants to believe that their child could be capable of such an act.

As the details around this case start to emerge, it's becoming clear that there are two very distinct portraits of Nehemiah Griego right now.

The first, from his family, is one of a loving boy who wanted to be in the military at some point, volunteered with his church group, and was a gifted athlete and musician. His uncle Eric Griego was even a former New Mexico State Senator.

More from The Stir: Mom Gets Away With Kidnapping Daughter After 12 Years on FBI's Most Wanted

The second portrait is much more chilling. Cops say he planned the attack for a week because he was "annoyed" by his mom. They say he planned it to be even worse. That he wanted to go to Wal-Mart, shoot people at random, and be shot to death himself.

They even say he had a 12-year-old girlfriend to whom he texted a photo of his dead mother's corpse. From the story it's unclear whether she was an involved participant in receiving the photo or if she was scared of him, too. But her age is a cause for alarm. At least for me. Is a 12-year-old really meant to be dating a 15-year-old? Let alone one accused of such horrific crimes ...

So which kid is real? What would cause a person to do something so cruel and horrific? Will we ever know?

As a parent, the idea that your child could ever do something like this is chilling. Police are still piecing together details and it's clear that this could have been a Newtown-like massacre. But even though it wasn't, one family is still dead. A 5-year-old girl and a 2-year-old girl were both shot in their beds and no one knows why.

The alleged perpetrator was someone they all loved and no one saw this coming. I guess the question is this: Do we ever really know the people we love? Is this possible in everyone's home?

What do you think the truth is about this boy?

I think you will find this boy displayed some serious warning signs before this happened. I'm sure those will emerge as the authorities start digging. Ad it's heartbreaking.

This horrific tragedy happened down the street from my home. You seem to have as much details as we do. I was a little bothered by your calling this child evil, but I can understand why you did. You mentioned that as a parent we cannot imagine our own child doing something so horrible but we don't always know why this happens. So I just ask that when calling someones child evil you think of your own child and how you would feel if something in side him or her snapped causing a situation like this. The family and friends are terrible pain nit only for their loss but because Nehemiah is being attacked even here by our own media. No doubt what he did was horrible and the act itself may even be considered "evil". But its not our place to decide ge is evil.

I think Nichole said it best, the act may be evil but it's not our place to judge him. This is heartbreaking and sad, such a tragedy, for ALL concerned. He is as much a victim of himself as the others are.

R u kidding me? This boy is straight evil! We were all born "evil" but are given the free will to choose right from wrong! He knows right from wrong. Is there ever a "good reason" to kill your 5 and 2 year old siblings? I think not...

I don't know how anyone can say they feel bad for this kid.. he murdered 5 people 3 of them under the ages of 10! babies! It's horrific and scary to even think this is possible.. he clearly needed help & i'm not going to lie and say if my daughter did something disgusting as this id disown her but I also wouldn't be portraying her as an angel... poor family! poor kids

Now this victim who did this evil deed need to pay for the evil deed....there are always repercussions to everything we do good and bad

The above story mentioned the ages of the two young sisters shot but did not include the age of his brother. I am not attempting to nit pick, I just think he should be mentioned in the same manner. Aside from that.. I cannot imagine what goes through anyone's mind when they are committing such a crime, as for the texts sent to his girlfriend he may have been attempting to "show off" his handy work to "impress" his her, or he may have been attempting to scare her. Who knows. It is heart wrenching loss no matter how you add it up.

Toni Hardesty-Richtsmeier I read the brother was 10! so sad.

Yes he is evil! His actions spell out evil! He cowardly shot up his family, a two and five yr old! If he ain't evil? I wanna know what evil really means. You don't have to personally know him to determined this. I don't have empathy for him. I have empathy for his victims. Then he was thinking about killing other innocent people. I just hope his victims get justice, that he die in jail a old man.
