First the very kid-unfriendly Elmo scandal, now this: The son of the woman who created Barney & Friends was arrested on January 9 for allegedly trying to murder a man! Seriously. You can't make this stuff up. Though his motive remains unclear, 27-year-old Patrick Leach, son of Sheryl Leach, was nabbed for allegedly shooting a 48-year-old man in the chest (who is in the hospital and expected to make a full recovery).
I've been saying for years that too much Barney will drive anybody insane, but I didn't mean, like, actually criminally insane. I was kidding (mostly!). Which is not to say that I am in any way, shape, or form implying overexposure to a singing purple dinosaur made Patrick Leach homicidal. But between this shocker and the Elmo thing, I think we need to start recognizing the people behind these iconic characters as actual human beings with problems that can't be solved by Mr. Noodle or a rousing rendition of the "I love you/you love me" song.
Still. Is this what the Mayans were talking about? When you add up everything that's happened over the past several months, it does kind of seem like the end of the world (as we know it, anyway).
It's bad enough when a scandal comes along to "wreck" the reputation of an adult admired by other adults. But an adult who is admired and adored by children? Talk about disillusionment.
Did your kids ever watch Barney or Elmo? (Did too much of either show ever make you feel crazy?)
