Military spouses in the Virginia area are finally getting what they deserve: A career fair aimed exclusively at them. While veterans themselves have often had the ability to hit up job fairs to meet with potential employers, it's not as common to find an event geared toward helping their husbands or wives. But now, Hiring Our Heroes is doing what they can to change that.
As Noreen O'Neil, Deputy Director, Military Spouse Programs, Hiring Our Heroes, U.S. Chamber of Commerce, told the Belvoir Eagle, "We noticed that military spouses were invited to the job fairs that Hiring Our Heroes was putting on, but they were very veteran oriented. So, our executive director saw the need to start this program." The program will not only help military spouses find jobs but improve their resumes and get interviewing experience. Awesome!
A program like this really is filling a void we don't often enough consider when we think of helping our heroes ...
Sure, we think of programs that help them get back on their feet. Help them find jobs after they come home from serving their country. But fully supporting and providing assistance to them requires a 360-degree perspective. In other words, thinking of how we can promote success for their entire family.
After all, it's not just the veteran who is affected by the military lifestyle. Spouses often have to ditch their jobs or not hold a full-time job, because they're moving from base to base. And surely that has an overall effect on a veteran's family. So to give their spouse an advantage -- to put them in touch with national employers who are specifically seeking out what spouses have to offer and who can offer them employment opportunities all over the country in case they have to move to another installation -- is most definitely another and yet completely amazing way of helping our heroes.
