Guns That Killed Firefighters May Have Been Purchased Illegally

That's Criminal 62

Dawn Nguyen was arrested on Friday for acting as a “straw purchaser” for buying convicted killer William Spengler a Bushmaster AR-15 assault rifle and a shotgun. The felon used the weapons to ambush volunteer firefighters on Christmas Eve -- he killed two of them and then himself. Two additional firefighters and an off-duty cop were hospitalized.

Spengler allegedly convinced Nguyen to purchase weapons for him that he could not legally obtain himself before setting fire to a house and car in Webster, New York. He set a kind of trap for the first responders to viciously attack them, and left a note behind that revealed the purchaser of the weapons, along with the sentiment that he wanted to “do what I like doing best, killing people.”

There’s no honor among criminals! While I’m glad that a suspect was identified, you have to wonder what was going through this guy’s head to call out the woman that had supposedly “helped” him. Or, if it turns out that Nguyen is innocent (it’s entirely possible that the guns were stolen -- we don’t have any more details at this point) he’s still a jerk for implicating her.

Ms. Nguyen has been charged with illegally obtaining firearms for a convicted felon, who in accordance with the law may not purchase them for himself. Authorities claim that she lied about being the sole owner of the weapons when she bought them.

Whether or not this girl intentionally bought the guns for Spengler, it leads to the larger issue of how gun control laws do not work to effectively prevent tragedy from occurring at the hands of a criminal. If gun laws worked, there’s no reason that a known murderer would ever be able to get his hands on one. But he disobeyed the law and obtained them anyway.

Weird. It’s almost like bad people that want to do bad things don’t care about following the rules. If they don’t follow current gun control laws, how can we expect additional restrictions to make any difference?

No matter how it happened, this is a horrendously sad story. Firefighters Michael Chiapperini and Tomasz Kaczowka lost their lives. Two more, Joseph Hofsetter and Theodore Scardino are still in the hospital. It not, however, evidence for more gun control laws. Maybe we should ask how convicted killers with the potential to strike again are allowed back in society instead. Let’s focus on the people, not the implements.

Do you think gun control laws would have prevented this crime?

No, it would not have prevented this. I don't think it would prevent anything really. Where there's a will, there's a way. These criminals and disturbed people will find a way to make these horrible incidents happen. Look at the mass stabbings in China, also in schools. What should we do, ban knives too?? We need to dig deeper and take a better look at the people, at mental health care, and put some changes on the table. Everyone needs to get the focus off of the guns. All they are is the weapon of choice in these cases.

Let's say, for the sake of argument, that we not only ban all guns in the United States, but manage to successfully confiscate every last one. How will we keep guns from entering the country illegally if we're completely unwilling to seal our borders? If we can't control who comes through our borders, how can we ever hope to control what come through?

Gun control only works for law-abiding citizens, criminals will always find a way to get them.

If assault rifles were illegal she couldn't have purchased one for him. This isn't rocket science.

RhondaVeggie speaks common sense. It bears repeating. "If assault rifles were illegal she couldn't have purchased one for him." The only way to cut down on gun violence is to cut down on the number of guns.

@RhondaVeggie - Do you know what an "assault rifle" is?? It's a TERM, used as a scare tactic by anti-gun people/groups to describe those guns that are "black & scary looking", not like the 'normal' guns we're used to seeing hunters carrying. There is no gun law that can be passed that will make criminals NOT have guns and NOT commit crimes. If you take away guns, only criminals will be armed. Seriously, do you think criminals follow laws? No. This isn't rocket science.
I HIGHLY suggest all uninformed people read this article below, I mean REALLY read it, take your time, and figure out that banning guns or creating more laws will do NOTHING to stop the insane criminals from getting their hands on guns and committing heinous acts of violence. This article explains what an "assault rifle" is.

Rhonda, what is an assault rifle?

I've asked that question on multiple gun control articles on CafeMom and no one ever answers. I wonder why?

Dirtgurly, that is an excellent article. It's too bad that the people who really need to read it have no real interest in educating themselves.

Guns do not have free will and are not living, so guns can not kill people. A person must load a gun and pull the trigger, causing the gun to fire and thrust a bullet forward. Again, the gun did not load itself, nor did it pull its own trigger, so how did it kill a person? It didn't - the person who pulled the trigger is the one who killed a person!
