Petition Against Westboro Baptist Church May Finally Be Its Downfall (VIDEO)

Twisted 40

Pop quiz: What online petition could you create that would get a record number of signers in an extremely short period of time, making it the largest online White House petition in history? Why, that's an easy one. The petition to declare the Westboro Baptist Church a hate group. The petition, started on December 14, had a goal of 25,000 signatures by January 13, but it has already well-surpassed that, with almost 250,000 signatures. Why is this group so unpopular? Let me count the ways!

The anti-gay group is known for picketing the funerals of dead soldiers, holding up signs with disgusting comments such as "God hates f*gs" and "God sent the shooter." After the tragedy in Sandy Hook, the group threatened to picket the funerals of children and teachers. From what I can tell, they never arrived in Newtown, Connecticut, but they got a huge amount of publicity (which they love) from their stunt.

If they are officially labeled a "hate group" as opposed to a church, it would take away their IRS tax exempt status. What exactly is to stop anyone from proclaiming themselves a church if this group can do it? Baffling.

In 2011, the Supreme Court said that the group's picketing was protected under the First Amendment -- but President Obama earlier this year signed legislation saying that group members need to stay at least 300 feet away from funerals.

One of the group's leaders, Margie Phelps, who looks like a barrel of laughs, recently said that "God sent the shooter" Adam Lanza to Sandy Hook Elementary because of Connecticut's pro-gay marriage laws. "Those children are better off dead than in this nation," the loony Phelps told interviewer David Pakman.

Hate groups can be tracked by the FBI and monitored by other hate group watchers. Other groups recognized as hate groups include the Ku Klux Klan and White Aryan Resistance. It's truly ridiculous that Westboro hasn't yet been officially lumped in with these other losers. They need to be, and pronto.

Do you think Westboro is a hate group?

I understand why they are considered a hate group, but where will it stop. Many times on here, some women have considered the Catholic Church and other churches hate filled. Are people going to start petitions on this too? Just when does it end or start?

The difference is that their purpose is to cause others pain and misery. That makes them a hate group

No one is taking away their rights, they can still do and say whatever they like within the same laws that apply to us all. They're being MONITORED, not arrested. And their tax-exempt status definitely should be cut off.

I actually agree with billsfan on this one. Westboro doesn't pose danger to lives and they aren't threatening lives thus why be tracked by the FBI? Their message is truly hateful and gross; but so are other churches that preach against gays or are against equality for women. Should those churches be labeled and tracked as hate groups? Groups like the KKK threaten Americans lives, as far as I have heard the Westboro doesn't. They may have a bizarre and gross message but so do a lot of churches; Westboro just shows it in an extreme manner and that's what people are reacting to.

Christie, I completely agree with you.

And one may not feel they aren't threatening anyone, but I'd bet big money that if they target your child's funeral you'd be singing a different tune about them not hurting anyone.

HUGE difference between Westboro and the Catholic church, too! It's a matter of intent: The Catholic church feels how it feels and wants others to see it their way, but I don't see nuns and priests encouraging their parishioners to go to childrens' funerals screaming about "fags". C'mon, really?

For those of you who agree with this and other groups being tracked and monitored by the FBI, you're for it only because the government currently agrees with your definition of hate. What's it the governement had an entirely definition of hate? Say their definition was anyone who attempted to remove religion from the public square? Would you agree I'd you were the target?

They take their rights too damn far, they didnt protest my marine best friend's funeral because they had another one at the same time but they did write a nasty paragraph about him and how greatfull he was dead. Let me tell you at a funeral of over 200 people most being military members not one person was greatfull he was dead. They are nothing but a bunch of disgusting people who need to go very far away like to outer space

I don't know.  As much as I can stand this church, I don't know that I want them labeled a hate group.  IMO, it starts a precedent that will become more lax - labeling a church a hate group.  Sure this church is SUPER hatelful and SUPER extreme, but what about the next church to get that label?  And down the line?

Besides, I'd rather see individuals getting involved, preventing/blocking them from protesting, taking a stand, and showing love to these families - then the government stepping in and labeling them.

WHOOPS!!  BIG mistake above.  It is supposed to say, "As much as I can NOT stand this church"
