Sam DonaldsonSomeone as high-profile as broadcast journalist Sam Donaldson should know better than to drink and drive. All the same, Donaldson was arrested for a DUI in Delaware on Dec. 1, according to TMZ. SAM! What the heck were you thinking!?!?!?!

When I was in journalism school, one of my professors used to tell us about the "good old days," when he was working for TIME magazine and they'd plot out the next issue in an office while slamming back whiskeys, Mad-Men style. It always seemed kind of glamorous in the same way Don Draper's drunk work ethic does. In the same way those black and white photos of Woodward and Bernstein did on the cover of All the President's Men

But when it comes to real-life drinking and driving, there is no glamour. None whatsoever.

Someone in the public eye like Donaldson should know better than to get behind the wheel of a car, allegedly intoxicated. He's someone the public trusts. Someone who's spent his entire career bringing Americans the truth about things. Exposing crime and corruption. To find him in a mess like this is just shameful.

And on top of that, if Donaldson was drunk and driving, he is damn lucky he didn't kill anyone. According to reports, officers pulled him over just before 8 p.m. because he'd been driving on the shoulder of the road. Before 8 p.m. When the roads are full of people driving too and from dinner. To and from parties. Or from Christmas shopping at the mall.

As a journalist, seeing someone who's an icon in my profession get in trouble for something so very avoidable is sad. And I'm glad for the damage this will do to his reputation. When someone famous does something as dangerous as drinking and driving, they deserve to face the consequences like anybody else. It's a sin and a shame. I can only hope that he gets help and never does anything this stupid again.

Do you think public figures and celebrities should be held to a higher standard when it comes to drinking and driving?
