Military Wives Go Bare for PTSD (VIDEO)

by Lindsay Ferrier on December 7, 2012 at 4:40 PM

Battling Bare

Military wife and mom Ashley Wise was tired of struggling in silence as she and her children dealt with her husband's post-traumatic stress disorder following his deployments.

So she decided to do something that would get everyone's attention.

Check out our Moms Matter video featuring Ashley's story after the jump, and tell us in the comments what you think!

Moms Matter also held a Google Hangout yesterday with four more military wives and moms who had plenty to say about mental health and the military. Check it out:

As a reporter first in Columbia, South Carolina, then in Nashville, Tennessee, I covered military bases as part of my general assignment beat and always had a really hard time getting spouses of men in the military to speak publicly on any subject. They are a close-knit community, afraid to embarrass their husbands or their base by going public with anything that might be construed as criticism.

I'm glad that social media seems to be changing things in the military community. Between blogs, Twitter, and Facebook, military spouses are getting and giving support and speaking out, anonymously or not, about the problems they face. When it comes to PTSD in particular, this kind of online support seems incredibly helpful for these women. It is so important for them to realize that they are FAR from alone.

Check out Battling Bare's Facebook page for more information on how to get help for PTSD, or just to support the cause.

And Blue Star Families is a great resource for military families as well.

What do you think of Ashley Wise's story? Would you Battle Bare if you were in her shoes?

These women are just as heroic as their husbands and our nation is immeasurably better because of them.

I am not a military wife but have a family member that just finished serving.  Even though he has really bad PTSD he still lost his insurance.  When he went to the VA to talk to them about it they told him everyone has it and we can't afford to fix everyone and told him to wait for Obamacare.  He is no longer on his meds and is having a very rough time.  Now I was told this story, I didn't live it so I don't know how true it is, but I hope it is totally false(although I have a hard time believing he's lying).  We need to be taking care our soldiers before anyone else.  I love what these wives are doing because hopefully people will start paying closer attention to what is happening to our soldiers coming home.  I also think its great the blogger gave links so that people can find help if they need it.

Well, they might get discharged from the military for showing so much skin, breastfeeding moms did.

AngieHayes these are military wives meaning they aren't in the military, their husbands are. There's no way a civilian can be kicked out of the military when they were never in in the first place....

Not it isn't. The mothers you are referencing were disciplined for using their military uniform to support their personal cause, something against military law. Not only did that violate military law, the women knew so in advance did it anyway.

When you are in the military, it matters what your spouse does. I know, my dad was in it for over 10 years.

Sadly the above comment about Ashley is completely true. Even more sad is the fact that she is constantly searching for her 15 minutes of fame and cares very little about what ever cause she is in. A chronically unfaithful (and physically abusive to poor Rob) wife who is only interested in getting her own spotlight and will use whatever means available to her to achieve that.
