Dogs Are Driving Cars for No Good Reason at All (VIDEO)

Say What!? 3

dog drivingHere's an idea: Let's all move to New Zealand. Why? Well, besides the obvious (Middle Earth-esque scenery, an abundance of sheep, and really cool accents), there's one major motivating factor: Dogs are learning how to drive in New Zealand. Cars. Dogs, as in woof-woof, are learning how to drive cars, as in vroom-vroom. Why? Well, I have absolutely no freaking idea.

Actually that's not entirely true. Apparently, animal trainer Mark Vette has been giving dogs driving lessons for the past two months "as part of a campaign by the New Zealand Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA), meant to clear up 'common misconceptions' about rescue dogs."

Such as ... they don't know how to drive cars?

Sort of. Except the point is, even though dogs can't drive cars, they really CAN drive cars. Or, as SPCA Auckland CEO Christine Kalin explains it:

"Sometimes people think because they're getting an animal that's been abandoned, that somehow it's a second-class animal. Driving a car actively demonstrates to potential rescue dog adopters that you can teach an old dog new tricks."

Fair enough. (Although, as a dog owner, I'd be more interested in a self-walking potty-trained pup than a canine chauffeur.)

Still, "A" for effort? Seriously, check this out:

What dogs won't do for treats, I tell ya! Still, I think I'll hold out for Toonces. You know, The Driving Cat. (The Cat Who Could Drive a Car.)

Would you let a dog drive your car?
