Detroit Councilwoman Asks Obama for a Kickback in Exchange for the Votes Her City Gave Him

by Jenny Erikson on December 5, 2012 at 7:51 PM

Maybe Mitt Romney wasn't too far off base when he told his national finance committee that Barack Obama won reelection in part because of all the “free stuff” he offered.

Detroit City Councilwoman JoAnn Watson stated publicly on Tuesday that she believes President Obama needs to bail out her failing city because the majority of the voters (75 percent) there voted for him.

Side note -- why does Detroit need a bailout anyway? Didn't Joe Biden proclaim it all better? Surely a politician wouldn't lie, would he? Eh, it’s not like anyone takes Joe Biden seriously anyway.

Ms. Watson said, out loud and on video:

"Our people in an overwhelming way supported the re-election of this president and there ought to be a quid pro quo and you ought to exercise leadership on that … after the election of Jimmy Carter, the honorable Coleman Alexander Young, he went to Washington, D.C. He came home with some bacon … that's what you do."

Somebody please alert the Federal Election Commission, because that there is what we call fraud. Sorry, Detroit, but it’s illegal to buy votes in American politics. It’s one of the reasons America is best country ever. Now I know Obama didn’t outright promise you any kickbacks, so he’s off the hook. However, you cannot now demand he pay you for your support.

It’s frustrating to see so many Obama supporters with such a “gimme” attitude. Peggy wanted free gas and her mortgage paid for. Sandra wanted her sex life subsidized with free birth control. College students want free tuition. Obamaphone!

Free, free, FREE! All for meeeeee!

Come on now people, life doesn’t work that way and you know it. Money is not an intimate object; it is a unit of measurement. You get it in exchange for working. Every dollar you get from the government is a dollar that someone else worked for and was taxed on before it was redistributed to you. Or it was borrowed from China and someday your kids will have to pay it back.

If people in Detroit really want money for doing something, maybe they should try bartering goods and services, rather than asking for a partisan handout as payback for voting.

What do you think of the Councilwoman's request?

Wow. How 'bout you take some things out of context and pick and choose the parts of stories that push your own backwards agenda. I'm appalled that a blogger like you is given this forum. And the first story on the home page. The Stir should be embarassed.

I wouldn't expect anything less from a politician from Detroilet. Check out this gem produced by Steven Crowder about The Motor City. Hope the link works! http://youtu.be/1hhJ_49leBw

Ergh! If President Obama gives Detriot a bailout, then he will have to bailout thousands of other cities. I think the Councilwoman Watson should ask Mitt Romney for a bailout, considering he was born in Detriot. I mean he can give what he made last year to help out. Or maybe Donald Trump can give that $5 million to Detriot.

Karla, if you can't stand Jenny, why do you read and comment on her articles?

She's naive in not knowing that she needs to go through a backdoor dance that provides legal cover for the id pro quo but she's just saying out loud what the reality of politics is.

Her mistake is thinking that anyone believes that Detroit only voted for him so they could get the bacon.   African Americans were one of the groups he didn't have pander to with favors because he knew they'd vote for him no matter what.

@ TorrenceMom. While I agree that the comments from this councilwoman are out of line, she at least the guts to state publicly what ALL politicians (Dem AND Rep) say behind closed doors. I also believe the people who bash only Detroit come off as a little uppity and holier-than-thou, since we all know that each and every state in this nation has it's own "Detroit". So let's be fair in the forum and stick to the topic and this woman and her comments, and not judge an entire based on their corrupt politicians, since you have those in your city also. Let's get angry with the entire political system, not just one side or one city. Detroit would be a beautiful city if it were managed correctly, and anyone who can't admit that has never looked at it in person.

Why on earth would Mitt bailout Detroit?    If they couldn't be bothered to vote for him based on him being born there,   why should he bail them out for that reason?!   lol
