Detroit Councilwoman Asks Obama for a Kickback in Exchange for the Votes Her City Gave Him

Say What!? 18

Maybe Mitt Romney wasn't too far off base when he told his national finance committee that Barack Obama won reelection in part because of all the “free stuff” he offered.

Detroit City Councilwoman JoAnn Watson stated publicly on Tuesday that she believes President Obama needs to bail out her failing city because the majority of the voters (75 percent) there voted for him.

Side note -- why does Detroit need a bailout anyway? Didn't Joe Biden proclaim it all better? Surely a politician wouldn't lie, would he? Eh, it’s not like anyone takes Joe Biden seriously anyway.

Ms. Watson said, out loud and on video:

"Our people in an overwhelming way supported the re-election of this president and there ought to be a quid pro quo and you ought to exercise leadership on that … after the election of Jimmy Carter, the honorable Coleman Alexander Young, he went to Washington, D.C. He came home with some bacon … that's what you do."

Somebody please alert the Federal Election Commission, because that there is what we call fraud. Sorry, Detroit, but it’s illegal to buy votes in American politics. It’s one of the reasons America is best country ever. Now I know Obama didn’t outright promise you any kickbacks, so he’s off the hook. However, you cannot now demand he pay you for your support.

It’s frustrating to see so many Obama supporters with such a “gimme” attitude. Peggy wanted free gas and her mortgage paid for. Sandra wanted her sex life subsidized with free birth control. College students want free tuition. Obamaphone!

Free, free, FREE! All for meeeeee!

Come on now people, life doesn’t work that way and you know it. Money is not an intimate object; it is a unit of measurement. You get it in exchange for working. Every dollar you get from the government is a dollar that someone else worked for and was taxed on before it was redistributed to you. Or it was borrowed from China and someday your kids will have to pay it back.

If people in Detroit really want money for doing something, maybe they should try bartering goods and services, rather than asking for a partisan handout as payback for voting.

What do you think of the Councilwoman's request?
