This is the stuff nightmares, and court appearances, are made of. An American magician performing on a Dominican Republic local television show was allegedly doused by the host in flammable cologne and set on fire. Magician Wayne Houchin is recuperating in the hospital and is expected to make a full, scar-free recovery, but insists that his face and hair didn't catch on fire because of a trick gone wrong. In fact, it wasn't even a trick to begin with.
So what the hell is going on here?
According to reports, the cologne the host supposedly used to set Houchin on fire is commonly used in voodoo cleansing rituals throughout the nation, which leads me to believe the host thought Houchin was performing some black magic, or something, and needed to be punished for his sins.
I mean, I don't know why people light others on fire, I'm just guessing here.
The show never made it to air, thank goodness, but the station has yet to comment on the alleged attack that happened on set. You'd think they'd have issued a simple statement wishing Houchin a fast recovery or something, but nada.
I'm apt to believe Houchin's side of the story -- it really looks like the host sets Houchin's face on fire, then starts punching it. I don't think it was a trick done wrong and that Houchin's too proud to admit a mistake, but you never know. Stranger things have happened, i.e., a TV host setting someone on fire because they think they're doing the devil's work.
But man, alakazam, I hope this all gets sorted out soon.
