Elmo Accuser Claims He Didn't Lie About Underage Sex With Kevin Clash After All

Eye Roll 6

sheldon stephensI keep thinking this horrible Elmo sex scandal is finally over. Aren't you ready for it to be over with? I sure as hell am. But nope! IT LIVES ANOTHER DAY. According to TMZ, the accuser Sheldon Stephens wants to recant his recantation. I repeat, he is recanting his recant.

Everyone together in unison: SIGH.

So, when last we heard from Sheldon, his former lawyers (who had dropped his case) had sent out a statement as a courtesy: "He [Stephens] wants it to be known that his sexual relationship with Mr. Clash was an adult consensual relationship." Now Sheldon is reportedly interviewing new lawyers and is saying he was "pressured" to accept a $125,000 settlement to take back his story. He will gladly give up the $125,000 just so he can speak his truth. Oh child.

TMZ reports that Sheldon was "crying during the final negotiations and repeatedly said he didn't want to sign." And for some reason, that little detail just makes me lose patience with him. Any tiny crumb of empathy I may have had for the guy, the wee glimmer of doubt I sheltered that he might actually be telling the truth, just fled. That he wants us to know he cried ... Is this Sheldon trying to appeal to our emotions?

Ugh. This young man. I just can't.

Look, I am all for supporting a man who cries over stuff worth crying over (your kid's dance recital, hitting your thumb with a hammer). But part of me wonders if he cried because he thought the settlement would be much, much bigger. And part of me wonders if he's still holding out hope for an even more lucrative payoff. Restore his good name? Too flippin' late, man! He's revealed himself to be unstable and unreliable. I seriously doubt Sheldon tried to take down Elmo for truth and justice. This is all about Sheldon-Drama and money.

Who do you believe -- the Sheldon before the settlement or the Sheldon who's talking now?

Nothing screams 'credible' like constantly changing your story. Dude, you wanted the money, you got the money, now shut up. He's just pissed because he wanted more money.

I'll add that anyone who says "I was abused XX years ago and I'm just coming forward now" is already suspect of lying. Especially when the accused has money. Now they are doubly suspected of lying. So people who come forward and change their story and act like this guy, they make it unbelievably MORE difficult for a person who really WAS abused to come forward.

I was wondering if their was a settlement.  That makes me more suspect.  Often victims are 'paid off' to keep it quiet and the fact that it isn't worth the fight.

I don't know.

I just don't care for the tone of these blogs and many who comment on them.  For a true victim much of this sounds normal (Not all) - waiting for many years to come forward, being pressured into a settlement, not being taken seriously, etc.

If he is lying I hope that is proven and he gets taken to court for it.

Can we please stop saying that "Elmo" is being accused? Last time I checked, it's not the furry red Muppet, it's the puppeteer. Repeatedly saying he's trying to take down Elmo is slightly disturbing...

However it is true that some victims wait years before revealing what happened to them because of the brainwashing that had been done to them, it is not normal for them to continue to change their story and then accept money on top of that. Liar from the beginning.
